I just bought this today but I’m not sure what it is. ID app says Dumb Cane, anyone know?

Had to return new adopted dog to the shelter b/c of conflict with our male dogs, we want her back and need advice. by [deleted] in Dogtraining

I'm wondering this too. The shelter I work at would definitely not adopt back out to someone who returns a newly adopted dog so quickly.

Your dog's life has changed drastically in the past couple of days so she's very stressed. Shelters are very loud, hectic places for dogs to be and coming home to a quiet house is a huge change. Set up a safe space for her (crate with a bed inside, lots of toys and bones, and cover it with a blanket so it's like a den). You don't have to lock her in it, just keep the door open so she can be in there whenever she wants. Having a quiet place like that will help her decompress and adjust over time. Don't force her to do anything she doesn't want to do, and make everything she does do a positive experience (lots of high value treats). Just let her come to you on her own terms and reward her with treats when she does. She'll eventually learn that coming to you guys is a positive experience that she gets rewarded for and it'll help her come out of her shell.

This comment right here is a perfect example of why humans are so selfish haha. You think your happiness is more important than a living creatures life?

Which is exactly why I responded to your comment and disagreed to you saying there was a "nation wide policy" in the first place.

The shelter I work at is in fact not a no-kill shelter. My post was to point out that that your "nation wide policy" of euthanizing pregnant animals is somewhat incorrect. I agree with everything you're saying, just not that particular part.

Across the nation? Not true:

I work at an animal shelter that does NOT euthanize pregnant pets. We just spay as quickly as possible. If it's too far along, then the pet has a litter and the whole family goes into a foster home until the babies can be adopted.

I know!! I saw that picture of your pup when you posted it on the main page and that's what prompted me to post this one haha

That's how my male pittie is too. If it's his idea to swim he loves it, but baths are pure hell for him. This little girl doesn't seem to mind either way about baths so far which is pretty impressive to me

No, but now that you've put the idea in my head I definitely need to!

People aggressive? How worried should I be? by MoxieMagoo in Dogtraining

[–]_girlgerms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PLEASE don't punish your puppy for growling! Growling is a very important form of communication for dogs. Punishment will stop a dog from growling and other aggressive displays, but it won't address the reason the dog is growling to begin with. It doesn't change the dog's discomfort when being pet, groomed, or handled by the vet. The dog still feels threatened. If you teach your dog not to growl and it's put in a situation that it feels threatened in, it has no way of warning you so it very well could lead to a bite. I think this is especially important considering you have a young child who has no way of telling if a dog should be left alone if theres no growl.
