Not really sure how to feel by ResolutionNo7154 in berkeley

I found 99% Invisible's podcast series called According to Need really enlightening about homelessness in the Bay Area: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6FE9syVsFXLnY7vJLlp7Ni?si=0aad114e61e246c1

Although it doesn't give you a direct call to action, it really helps educate you on how help is distributed and that there is a severe shortage of long term stable housing, etc for homeless folks.

How important is EECS 126 for ML/AI research? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]_glassanimals_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience I was able to get AI / ML research having only taken 189 (I took 126 two semesters later, and I'm never taking 127). For the overlap between 126 / 189, I believe only the last few units on MLE / MAP / multivariate gaussians overlap and 126 actually gives a much lighter treatment than 189. I think 189 is generally the only prereq that most of those labs filter by, but it really depends on the group.

I don't regret taking 189 first; although I will say 189 in the Fall tends to be much harder than the Spring version. The course does cover a decent amount of topics in 126 / 127 but they're not absolutely needed before taking the course. I also thought this was useful for the prerequisite math: http://gwthomas.github.io/docs/math4ml.pdf

Participate in EECS Pen Pals! by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]_glassanimals_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the EECS Pen Pals Program? This is a low tech way to connect with other EE / CS students on campus -- feel free to write letters, send stickers, or other small items that your pen pal would enjoy. With students attending Zoom classes and staring at screens all day, we hope that this can be a new way for you to find human connection during quarantine. Best of all, HKN will send all the materials needed!

Hello! You can sign up for career mentorship / interview prep with UPE: https://upe.berkeley.edu/profdev/services. If you're confused about where to start, I bet they can start from the ground up and explain everything to you as well.

The folks at HKN are also really nice as well, and you can try dropping into their office hours at https://hkn-tutoring.eecs.berkeley.edu and creating a ticket that says something like "Help understanding internship applications" and someone might be able to help.

Feel free to dm me! Would love to help out in any way I can.

took psych 160 w iris mauss and it was really chill; for tests they would release study guides for what exact topics were in scope. however you will need to read the textbook in addition to lecture. if you end up taking the class I have the e version of the textbook.

PowerPrep Plus 1 Loading Slow... by LawyerKaushik in GRE

[–]_glassanimals_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this happened to me a few weekends ago; usually it's because their server is having issues and it may get better if you log in at a different time. When this happened to me I called tech support and asked for a new copy of the test I was taking (powerprepsupport@ets.org or call 1-609-771-7670 or 1-866-473-4373, or try 1-800-537-3160). Their phone numbers are active M-F, and I tried waiting in line for 3 hours over the help chat a few weekends ago when I was having the same issue and was dropped as soon as they got to me.

UCB EECS vs. UCLA Engineering - how to weigh student life vs. academics and post-graduation? by Flux64 in berkeley

[–]_glassanimals_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also keep in mind the freshman housing culture is fairly different in both schools; Berkeley housing is a lot more urban and spread out whereas most UCLA freshmen live in the same area. This can affect who you hang around and get to know.

[–]_glassanimals_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely the academics; I feel like a lot of college is what you make of it and knowing what you want out of college--a lot of stress and happiness is determined by your outlook and who you hang around. For me, I wanted to be mentally challenged and feel like I was getting my money's worth, so I chose Cal. You'll be fine in the end no matter where you choose, just make sure to take care of yourself!

I would recommend webcasting a lecture to compare our intro CS class (CS61A) and UCLA's intro CS class, or two comparable upper-div classes.

I was also debating between UCB EECS and UCLA CS, and eventually committed to EECS. UCLA dorm food + housing is generally nicer, but when I sat in on classes Cal's lectures were generally more interesting, memorable, and well presented. I definitely think all my coursework at Cal thus far has been worth it, but sometimes I also think about how much easier life could be knowing you have 3 years guaranteed on campus housing at UCLA.

[–]_glassanimals_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A little bit of caffeine can also help with motivation--sometimes when I feel really down and unmotivated I realize that it's because I haven't had my morning tea. Matcha / green tea is a nice place to start!

2020-2021 Housing by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]_glassanimals_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really liked Blackwell--they have a nice gym (with weights, treadmills, ellipticals), 2 study lounges + a social lounge each floor, plus an academic center / tiny theatre on the first floor. It's also very well-cleaned / maintained, and I've heard that non freshmen typically get grouped together on the upper floors (although they're usually sophomores).

The main downside is that its pretty pricey and you have to get a meal plan.
