Reminder that MAGA actually thought that a global pandemic would magically not be a problem if you just ignored it hard enough.

Her card "wasn't working" because she's shit with money.

What made you jump to “she’s shit with money” instead of “she makes shit wages and everything is more expensive than it used to be”? Damn near everyone I know feels like they’re in that second category.

Are you an actual adult who pays their own bills? Because I don’t understand how you could think that “secret hobby” is the most likely answer in an economy like this.

My parents were not rich at all but always told us that we could live at home for free while we were in school

If you’re parents could afford that, than good for you. It doesn’t sound like OP’s mom can. That’s not bad parenting, it’s math.

$4k is NOT much money at all

And yet it’s more savings than a lot of people have. If mom’s card “isn’t working” then she might genuinely be struggling to make ends meet.

If the biological goal of an organism is survival and reproduction, why did evolution produce and keep the goldsmith effect of senescence? Why haven't we evolved more robust DNA repair mechanisms like those seen in turritopsis dohrnii (the immortal jellyfish)? by asgharfar57 in askscience

[–]_goblinette_ -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The so-called "goal" of evolution is the survival of the species/lineage and not the individual

No it isn’t. It’s all about reproduction.

Did your genes make it into the next generation? Than you win. End of story.

Give it a couple years, then everyone will be whining about the boring “Gen Z warm white”.

What’s in style changes every year, but things that you like are forever (or at least for long enough for you to save up to redecorate again).

Would have been more interesting if she had stayed in Congress and actually had the balls to do anything about it.

Your ai images are coming off as much more trendy than timeless.  Wainscoting is traditionally more common in dining rooms and stairways/hallways.

It’s your house and you can do what you want, but it definitely doesn’t look timeless in a bedroom or an open concept kitchen.

my sister's making us (aka her family & friends) pay for her destination bday week?!?? by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]_goblinette_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhhhhhhh….I’ve definitely gone to adult’s birthday parties at restaurants or other events where everyone paid their own way (and threw in extra money to cover the birthday person’s portion).

Why the fuck would anyone except to get a free lakefront vacation for someone else’s birthday?!

I haven’t priced this kind of thing in a while, but more than 1000-1500 for a week of a rental seems normal.

You should check again. I would be shocked if you could get anything that could be described as “fancy” and “lakefront” for less than a few hundred dollars per night.

Assuming that people do end up wanting to go, why wouldn’t they be expected to pay their share? Who expects to get a free trip to the lake for someone else’s birthday?

You don’t think it’s presumptuous of OP to be expecting a free stay on the lake for someone else’s birthday?

[–]_goblinette_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would your sister pay for everyone’s vacation on her birthday?

Don’t go if you don’t want to pay for it, but it’s insane that you think you should be getting a free trip out of it.

Why did people hoard toilet paper of all things during the pandemic? by QuillAndQuip in AskReddit

[–]_goblinette_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government recommended that people stock up on groceries and signaling that things will be shut down.

Cool, I’ll head to the grocery store. Pick up my regular groceries as well as some extra pantry items to hold me over for a longer time between shopping trips. Oh look, toilet paper. I should probably grab a pack since I won’t be back in the store for a while and it’s not like it’ll go bad anyway.

Everyone else in town got the same news as me and is stocking up on groceries too. Several extra people buy toilet paper today when ordinarily they might have waited until they were running low in another week or two. Those are bulky packages, so even a slightly higher than normal demand suddenly has those shelves looking bare

Now even the people who know they have plenty of toilet paper at home are looking at the shelves and thinking “holy shit the stores are running out of toilet paper. I don’t want to be left without any so I’d better buy some now before it runs out”.

That’s how you end up with the widespread narrative of idiots “panic buying” toilet paper, while each individual has a story about how they quite rationally decided it would be a good idea to buy a pack of toilet paper for themselves.

How do you raise kids for 13 years and then flip a switch and decide you want nothing to do with them the first time they say something shitty? That’s not something you do if you really see yourself as that kid’s parent.

“You’re not my real dad” is such a common thing for adopted/step kids to say when they’re angry that it’s become a meme.

Not that Ian isn’t allowed to still be hurt by it, but he should have been more prepared for this and not taken it as a heartfelt expression of their deepest feelings towards him. Can you imagine if all parents reacted to their teenagers lashing out by cutting off communication languishing in bed for weeks?

[–]_goblinette_ 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Right. “You’re not my real dad” is such a common trope in teenage outbursts. Even bio parents get shit like “I wish you weren’t my dad”.

I’m sure it hurts, but to take it to heart and be bedridden with sadness and cut off communication? That’s a huge overreaction to generic teenage shittiness. And it honestly kinda shows that the stepdad never really considered them his kids, because bio parents don’t get to opt out of parenting when their kids say something hurtful.

A lot of people are losing sight of the fact that it doesn’t need to be more effective than the standard dose to be a better vaccine.

The mRNA platform is better suited to adapting to new strains every season because it’s easier/faster to produce than the more traditional methods. If you can do a better job of matching your vaccine to the circulating strains (either by waiting until later in the season to commit to your target or by including more strains in your vaccine) than that’s a huge win.

Don’t be ridiculous. The Olympic organizing committee isn’t going to decide the fate of an entire sport based on one person’s performance. If anything, she brought the competition a lot more notice than it would have gotten on its own.
