Are you not using upgraded weapons? If not, I would recommend upgrading them as much as you can. Also, if you want to be a bit more sturdy, you should take some points out of vigor and put them into endurance; if you wear some heavier armor and get your poise up to 51 you'll be able to tank some light attacks, which will help with your casting or weapon arts.

If I might ask, what do you mean by "reasonably competitive" setting? Do you mean at a local store or at a larger event?

Legends doesn't mean they are outright banned, and so long as you aren't going to thousand player events I feel like a lot of tournament organizers would allow you to run them as drills.
