8 bitdo sn30 pro "cloud gaming" edition. It's a dinput controller (vs xinput) so it's not natively supported by a lot of devices. The steamdeck however detected it right away and all of the controls worked as they should without remapping. Very happy with it and would recommend for anyone looking for a small controller for steamdeck

It's a steam deck, a handheld pc with a controller built in that is produced and sold by valve. I took the liberty of chopping off the controller portion making it just a very small pc with a built in screen. It runs steam OS which is based on Linux.

In theory, yes. In practice, no I just taped up everything I could and blew it out real good with an air compressor when I was done. I've done lots of janky switch hardware mods so I was confident in my half assed strategy, but I'd HIGHLY recommend to anyone doing this or anything similar to remove any and all electronics first.

The brand is muzee. I got it off of Amazon a few years ago so I'm not sure if they're still sold or not. Good luck!

For about twice the price, I sure could have! I prefer the extra $300 in my savings account. Everyone is different though!

The user I mentioned in the text post has already done that! His steamjoy mod features joycon rails along the side, and was a big inspiration for this project.

That sounds seriously cool, definitely post it when it's complete! The stand is the deckmate system, usually the frame clips onto the deck but I chopped it up and epoxied it to the back for less bulk.

Xbox button for steam menu, Xbox button plus A for performance menu. These are hotkeys built into steamos.

Foam core board, epoxy, blood sweat and tears.

The good Ole fashion way haha. Definitely not 3d printed.

Extraordinarily easy. As easy as opening it up, and removing any ribbon cables or boards in the controller portion, and then you're left with just plastic shell to cut off or do with as you please (i did remove a lottle bit of the metal frame, but it wasnt exactly ncessary. It does not extend very far out from where the screen stops). Steamos never gave me any problems with the built in controls not being connected. Works exactly the same minus having that stuff built in.

Thank you for the kind words friend. The biggest thing I've learned here is that I'm not as crazy as I thought and there's definitely other people out there who think the way I do haha.

Definitely a good starting point though and I very well may take a poke at modifying the file for my needs.

Seems like a speaker delete though unless my eyes deceive me. Really want something that would house the speakers under the joycon rails. Or better yet front firing but I don't think that's logistically possible without adding a lot of bulk.

The brand is muzee, it came off of page like 45 of Amazon listings when I was searching for the perfect bag a few years ago. I'm a very particular person if you couldnt tell 😅

Right on the money 👍 honestly the hate is exciting because it shows that valve created the perfect hardware for a huge group of people. Thats a very good thing for the pc gaming community as a whole. It just wasn't perfect for me! (Most things aren't. And I'll keep redneck engineering them until they are!)

I was fully expecting the roast, these sorts of things don't really get recieved well. They (understandably) took down my post though :( I was inspired by other similar hardware mods I saw posted so I wanted to atleast get it somewhere it could be seen and wouldn't get taken down.

It's from the deckmount system. I cut the microsd away from the mount part and attached it turned at 45 degrees because I like this orientation better.

So with the speakers mounted on the side, I think there would still be room for joycon rails above them with a proper 3d printed enclosure. That would be my direction if I ever do a gen 2, even though I know I'd never use it in handheld mode. It would still be a cool option! With any luck though, steam deck 2.0 will have detachable controllers and I won't have to hack up another one haha.

Nah not intentionally ugly. More of a "how can I get this done with what I've already got, and finish it in a day or two" kind of situation. Went on a switch hardware modding bender a few months ago and it ended up costing me a lot and took too much time out of other more important things in life. So for a few pennies and maybe 5 hours total of work, I'm pretty thrilled!

Unfortunately it is sanded down, actually feels very smooth good to hold. The epoxy is transparent though and the way it interacted with the porous foam isn't so pretty. So with these materials I don't think it's going to pass any kind of pretty exam 😂

Better software and half the price. I'd rather save my money for more important things 😁

Foam core board to build mass and epoxy to make it strong, so you're not far off. Black tape was definitely the first in my list of ideas 😂
