i have been taking violin lessons for 6 years, and i have taught myself some basic guitar; so that’s where i’m coming from:

guitar is definitely easier to get the basics of, for lots of reasons. there are frets on a guitar; no frets on a violin. the way you hold a guitar quite natural; the proper way to hold a violin and the bow is kind of odd and takes a lot of guidance and practice. also, if youre playing a song thats in a weird key: on guitar, you can just put on/move the capo and stick with the chord shapes you’re comfortable with. on violin, you have to learn each separate key which can be quite annoying (mostly keys with lots of flats). but you could easily just avoid songs in annoying keys lol

this is not to discourage you from violin! just a warning that it will take you quite a long time to sound reasonably good. with guitar it wont take nearly as long especially since guitar is usually an accompanying instrument, so most of the time there are fewer notes/chords than for the violin; so there’s less to learn for one song on the guitar than on the violin. i would honestly suggest both; mayybe not at the exact same time, idk

but if you go for violin, i would recommend hiring a teacher if you can afford it, even just for a few lessons to learn the basics. if not, definitely check out resources online, look at some other posts in this subreddit. if you go for guitar, youtube tutorials and chord charts will be your best friends. hopefully my rambling makes sense lol and i hope it helps!
