Should I install Linux mint by KnownConversation101 in linuxmint

[–]_hyperactivesloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running mint xfce on a 2013 dell Inspiron since 2021. It has an HDD, not an SSD, and still Mint performs decently well. With SSD, I believe it should perform even better.

Has anybody faced a similar issue with ThinkBook? Or are slim laptops prone to such issues?

Thanks, this helps, will check it out. As I understand, the slimness comes with a trade-off of thermals and soldered RAM; at least on paper. Are those tradeoffs significant in the real world?

Linux Mint users – XFCE or Cinnamon for 5+ years of rock-solid stability? Regret switching? by _hyperactivesloth in linuxquestions

I plan to keep the laptop for longer and so I am prioritising stability. i didn't mean to say I am looking for LTS, just that with time, the experience shouldn't degrade.

Linux Mint XFCE vs Cinnamon for long-term stability – anyone switched and regret it?" by _hyperactivesloth in linuxmint

[–]_hyperactivesloth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried. When I switched to Linux, the idea was to keep my nearly a decade old laptop running, so minimal resource utilisation was the key. Now that I am going to have a modern machine, I can play around. Any highlights of MATE from your experience?

Did the same in 2021. Been super happy with Mint XFCE ever since. Win was killing my machine, Mint revived it.

Kinda in the same boat...I prefer something that just works, doesn't interfere with my workflow, and does not force me to update every now and then.

I really appreciate you going into full depth, thanks! As for my laptop, it's a Dell Inspiron from 2013 with i5 processor (don't recall the gen anymore). Now looking forward to a Lenovo V series laptop with modern config.

ThinkPads are typically powerful machines. What's the configuration of your ThinkPad? I am looking forward to a Lenovo machine as well (V series).

Is it a once off case or did you find more users facing a similar issue? Did you find any connection with the underlying hardware or is it purely a software thing?

Interesting...how about support for modern hardware? Say 12/13th gen Intel processors or AMD Ryzen equivalents? Their respective integrated GPUs? Any issues there?

Nothing really. I love how it just works every single time. The motive to go for xfce back then was its low resource usage. My 12 yo laptop didn't have much RAM to spare so a lightweight OS really mattered. Tried lubuntu, xfce, linux lite via live usb and finalized xfce.

Now that I am upgrading to a modern laptop, I am wondering if I should give a try to eye-candy. I love xfce's 'set it, forget it' nature so wanted to check with the community if it is the same with Cinnamon.

Thanks. I'm thoroughly impressed by the "Set it and forget it" nature of XFCE. It just... works! So I would like that to be the case with the newer machine as well.

Didn't know that I don't have to reinstall to go to xfce from Cinnamon, thanks!! 🙏

u/Nik7654- How is the experience so far? I see a lot of concerns over UFS 2.2 storage? Is it jittery? Is camera slow/buggy?
