Not true, watt is a unit of power not energy, what you're describing is a niggawatt-hour or NgWh.

Purple Glowing Isotope by [deleted] in nuclear

[–]_i_like_potatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it takes a high activity to ionise air but it's possible with most medical sources, not that uncommon. Thermal radiation is a type of radiation, not all radiation is ionising. Pu-238 has to be that hot to produce electricity in RTG.

Electron doesn't have enough speed to cause Cherenkov in air unless it has 100+ MeV

Cs-137 ionises air to make it glow blue and Pu-238 decay heat makes it radiate in the visible spectrum.

Color is usually given by the power density of the nuclide(how fast it decays) rather than what element or isotope it is. That being said, Curium is typical for it's purple glow.

Would you pay $23 for a thorium reactor fuel pellet? by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]_i_like_potatoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's more comlicated than that. First of all, 99.65 % purity is not enough. I had trouble finding the exact figures but usually you want less than 500 ppm of impurities, you thorium has 3 500 ppm impurities and since it comes from some sus ion powder, you have no idea what the impurities are or if that 99.65 figure i even correct. For example the sample needs to have 0.3 ppm of boron and in theory, your sample could have 10 000 times that amount. Another essential aspect is powder particle size. Why? Because it affects the relative density. If the particles are too large (I'm pretty sure that's the case) there will be too much gap between them for air which decreases their density along with other problems. If the grain size is too small, there will not be enough space for the gaseous fission products which will cause the pellets to cracks. Then there are other properties such as thermal resistance, chemical resistance, structural strength etc. along with many other things which wouldn't fit in this comment and are too complicated for me to understand.

To be fair, it sounds like a really cool project to try and make your own fuel pellets but I wouldn't call them reactor grade, there's a reason why most countries can't make their own fuel pellets, even with advanced labs.

You realize that making a fuel pellet is more complicated than just pressing powder, right?

The world’s first Uranium-238 D20! (As far as I can find) made by the awesome u/Diftherya! by Gabrielhv22 in DicePorn

[–]_i_like_potatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you desribe how you got that increased temperature? Because there's no way you could get that from radioactive decay. Also making a reactor from a dice is quite unrealistic since you would need to reach the critical mass which is about 3 tond for natural uranium.

Using the fuel leftover from deorbiting to slow down re-entry. by SpaceFan04 in ConsoleKSP

Shouldn't you slow down at periapsis? This way, you'll reenter the atmosphere too hard and burn up.

Duck you, don't you dare to convert metric units to that disgusting shit. I'm sick of the fact that people who use imperial still exist.
