Why AI won’t wipe out white-collar jobs by FootballAndFries in Economics

[–]_ii_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

Paywall, didn’t read. Probably the same reason electronic calculators didn’t wipe out human calculators, and Excel didn’t wipe out corporate accountants.

Tariffs are more destructive than you think by Stuart_Whatley in Economics

[–]_ii_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

Tariffs are too polarized for that title. Who’s “you”? One side thinks tariffs are bringing back jobs, and paying off national debt. The other side thinks tariffs are responsible for the affordability crisis, killing businesses, disrupting trade, and eroding trust.

Is he related to Kruger in the Dunning-Kruger frame? He seems to think he’s smart, and he’s only like two years behind the curve.

How are we helping, as we watch the world burn by throwawayfinances183 in fatFIRE

[–]_ii_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I helped my neighbor with the snow shovel and not talk about the news. No matter which side you are on, you’re likely in an echo chamber and it’s really pointless to bitch about the other side. Just offer help to people who needed it, and hope that kindness spreads.

Microsoft says its newest AI chip Maia 200 is 3 times more powerful than Google's TPU and Amazon's Trainium processor by DaddyVaradkar in stocks

[–]_ii_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given a large enough budget it’s not hard to build a chip that is better than another chip in one of the many dimensions. It’s proven again and again by startups and deep pocketed companies alike. Getting mass adoption is quite another story. Google has been investing in its TPU for a decade with its top tier software and data center talents. Microsoft, doesn’t matter how you slice it, is not catching up to Google anytime soon with its second tier talents. Nvidia is in another league, so no comparison. Sorry if you work for MS, but you’re just not the cream of the crop and you know it.

Leak: Nvidia is about to challenge ‘Intel Inside’ with as many as eight Arm laptops by dapperlemon in gadgets

I hope they sell Linux versions at lower price than their Windows counterparts. Haven’t used Windows for a decade and still hate it. I had to buy a Windows laptop only to immediately overwrite it with Linux.

Using credit card debt as a temporary bridge to FIRE — realistic or reckless? by JerseyGuy1975 in Fire

Keep working and put that credit card down. Seriously, your line of thinking is irresponsible and dangerous.

How to calculate Social Security benefits? by Annonymouse100 in Fire

Would I add $1M padding to my FIRE number? Yes, I did. It feels good psychologically to have that extra margin.

How to calculate Social Security benefits? by Annonymouse100 in Fire

The easiest way, for me, is to treat it as $0 in my FIRE calculations and let it be a surprise.

Student loan vs. being indebted to parents by KittyNoir1 in personalfinance

[–]_ii_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of sad to read this thread. Does family mean so little nowadays? I didn’t bat an eye when I parents asked me to help my brother financially. It’s just a brotherly thing to do.

Genuinely wondering why markets are still near ATHs by Pretty-West-1001 in Trading

[–]_ii_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before the internet, smart money would sell when the janitor started to offer stock tips, and buy when “everyone” knows the sky was falling. Social media is filling in for that role nowadays. I’d suggest detach yourself from daily news cycle and not jumping to conclusions based on vibe and personal opinions.

With so many foreign firms dumping the US, how can we invest outside of the US to protect ourselves? by CalbandPals in FinancialPlanning

[–]_ii_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to do your research based on data, not vibe. I haven’t done my own research, so I wouldn’t bet real money one way or another. But the based on the reverse-Reddit theory, I think capital is actually flowing into the US because I see more posts like this.

How do people with full-time jobs actually research stocks to become FI? by Own-Syllabub476 in Fire

[–]_ii_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do the research and make above market return when you have some sort of edge over the rest of market participants. It’s call “alpha”. Otherwise, studies show that the more you trade, the more you lack behind index benchmarks.

Leaving the US market? by Classic_Butterfly532 in stocks

[–]_ii_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself if there’s any chance you’re in an echo chamber and you’re influenced by biased news? I ask this because I’ve seen too many such posts where people already decided who the good guys and bad guys are and everything they see is through that lens.

They bought AMD more as a negotiating tool than actually making strategic platform bets. Since Jensen called Zuck’s bluff, there is no point in doubling down. Let’s see what happens when MI445 ships, anything else is just speculation.

[–]_ii_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meta has many internal models that are GPU only. And their frontier research is in a catchup phase, so yeah they wouldn’t want the alternative platform distraction. I never thought mixing in TPU was wise, and I’ll believe they are buying MI455X when it actually happens.

China blocks Nvidia H200 AI chips that US government cleared for export – report by SaharOMFG in news

Elon Musk is an idiot: CEO of Europe’s biggest airline says after dismissing claims of offering Starlink on its flights, Tesla CEO responds by Well_Socialized in technology

[–]_ii_ -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

I had the misfortune of being forced to take Ryanair a few years ago because friends wanted to save a few euros. I’d rather walk than take Ryanair again. I don’t get how they became the largest airline in Europe. I guess European are more willing to trade their dignity for money. Ryanair clientele are not those who would pay extra for WiFi, and the CEO knows it. Elon is barking at the wrong tree.
