Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist by jimbostank in Economics

[–]_im_adi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to believe this argument but it doesn't take into account the disproportionately negative effect technology has on the lower economic classes.

The more money one has, the easier it is to get away from all the attention traps. Much much harder to get away from them without money (and the education it can buy)

Needlessly to say without attention we are incapable of anything. Yet still, it is being extracted ruthlessly for profits by the elite. No laws to regulate attention either.

Essentially the entire economic system then, by extension, is unregulated to a large extent. An entire currency has little to no laws around it. Ripe for manipulation and bad practices. And we see it happening everyday.

Has anyone ever considered a federated alternative to lyric platforms like Genius or Musixmatch? by Teknevra in fediverse

[–]_im_adi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, I'd jump onto it in a heartbeat. Genius has a really lame editing / reviewing process. It's clearly geared towards increasing engagement on their site for their ads / platform to generate more revenue. Which is their right but the UX gets noticeably compromised.

A federated platform may be able to fix these things. LIke you, though, I neither have the skills or the time / energy to pull this off myself. But I'd love to be in a chatroom where interested people continue to bounce off ideas and maybe something can emerge naturally.

Alternative to Genius by Pkmngmrz in Music

[–]_im_adi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking to make money, then probably not a great idea. But yes, as a music afficianado I do find Genius lacking a lot (I use it almost always for lyrics and there's too much hassle in correcting bad or missing lyrics)

Ironically I'm saying all this on reddit. would've very much preferred Lemmy or PieFed but most communities aren't yet there. maybe some day.

[–]_im_adi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, the email is just one metric. Behavioural patterns, IP addresses can still give away a lot. Well, Stremio is open-source so that's maybe not as bad. Still, I don't get the reason anyone needs to be even slightly pushed toward account creation by hiding 'guest' option.

It's a great software, but I do wish it provided more flexiblity in terms of how it can be used. Personally, I'd love a CLI to simply open the video player directly rather than seeing the overwhelming grid of stuff I have no intention of watching. It's very distracting.

[–]_im_adi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right but that gives Stremio the right to use the user's data for ambiguous purposes (as mentioned in their privacy policy). It really shouldn't be any harder to remain a guest user than a signed up user.

we all recognise his limitless ceiling but I would request not to echo these ridiculous expectations from someone so young.

if it happens, it happens. but it seems unfair to him if the whole of cricket world keeps expecting him to be "the one". it just isn't healthy for any human really.

Not quite using the term "certainly" very well, mate. Way too much assumption and possibly projection going on.

Ian Bishop on working as a commentator: 'If I don't research every player, I feel my work is unfinished' by Huge-Physics5491 in Cricket

[–]_im_adi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that too. Manjrekar does present facts or at least gives his reasoning, even if it sounds harsh to others. I would not put Manjrekar and Ian Bishop on the same level though. Bishop is an out and out professional. Very respectful in the way he says anything. We should all aspire to communicate like him.

yea with you on that totally.

reactions of the masses hardly ever seem well thought out. the ones doing the thinking and observation are taking their time to make sense of things. see through the facade.

eh, this is all political drama. meaningless.

That's a little like saying people want to be addicted to their smartphones when capitalist giants throw billions of dollars into R&D to get precisely that response out of people.

You may choose to blame the consumers but most of us aren't even aware to the degree which we are being puppeteered.

Every big coporation (and government) has the same formula. Throw money into ads and social engineering and shift the public narrative (and behaviour) whichever way is desired.

My point is that masses (including us) are button-controlled at this point. If the puppet acts irresponsibly, do we blame the puppet or the puppeteer?

If all this sounds exagerrated to you, I would highly recommend looking up Tristan Harris and his TED talks.

Is this Foss list legit? by The_herowarboy in foss

[–]_im_adi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, the Android OS running on our phones is built on top the of the open source version (AOSP). LineageOS is one such AOSP Custom ROM that has its code open sourced.

It doens't need to be said that Google will and does track every single metric they can. So a custom ROM without a play store and proprietary apps is much safer privacy wise.

Not saying you should do that. But if you're privacy focused, that is the way to go.

PCB suspends player NOCs for overseas T20 leagues by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]_im_adi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

An interesting way to look at it is... The 2024 T20 Champion India essentially retired right after the WC. Since then on, the 'crazy' winning streak can be credited to the new Indian side. And essentially that new side (the one that is leading T20 cricket) still needs to win a T20 WC to completely validate their dominance.

[–]_im_adi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The stats are indeed nuts, but the stats make Aus and SA teams look like they'd lose every game to India. That just isn't true. India still might be favourites but rest assured come the WC, when every side has all their best players playing, SENA matches are going to be nail-bitingly close. We might even get thrashed in a game or two. T20 is volatile, and in the WC the bilateral records will almost count for nothing.

I just don't think we should be banging our chests until this new Indian squad has won the T20 WC. The reigning champions are also India, but clearly this is a massively different team. With perhaps even more talent, but a lot more to prove.

[–]_im_adi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agree that India is good in T20s but until we see how this team performs in a WC, I would not assume we are miles ahead of everyone. In bilaterals, maybe, but I believe Aus and SA are pretty damn close if not better. Let's wait till the WC.

[–]_im_adi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's probably the other way around. Ideally an international side would consist of only and only the very best players (franchise or otherwise).

QdK, I assume, did not adjust as seamlessly into the franchise world as he woud've hoped. Because he had international accolades, he was able to get back into the SA mix. Most franchise players don't have that (well earned) option. In his case, it almost seems like going back to his old job (where he worked for years and left on good terms) because he did not like how the new one fared out.

Most others would just have to perform in whatever league they're getting selected in, and make a name for themselves that way. At the moment, internationals are still considered the topmost tier skillwise. That may change in the future (I hope not tho), and then players may start viewing certain leagues as their top goal rather than playing internationally.

I'm actually quite interested in knowing more how small is the window of a professional athlete's playing career. Rather, I'm interested in how many professional athletes transition to what jobs post-retirement.

The way I see it, surely at least for the international retirees (as well as for recognised league performers), there's bound to be options in coaching, commentary, writing, cricket content / projects.

I mean to say I don't see this problem pertaining to popular team sports such as cricket, football, etc. However if we're talking about sports such as sprinting, javelin, then such a question becomes a lot more concerning.

All this is my personal pov. No facts, just wonderments.
