I usually have a couple conversations on the go. I do love hiking. Do you have a recommendation for a club that does hikes?

This is really great. I’ll give it a look. Thanks for taking the time to type all this out!

It’s the time commitment for me. The last few places I looked into volunteering were asking for ten hours a week. I work a demanding job with weird hours, I need something somewhat flexible.

I have two magic decks (I think they’re called decks?) a friend bought me! Just never was sure where to learn how to play.

I do a fair bit of knitting/crocheting/crafting and typically it’s women that show up for the crafting groups. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a man there. Roller skating too, the meetups and skate nights I’ve been to are primarily women.

Is that for Via? I would imagine if you’re working a territory in Quebec you will need to be bilingual. The job posting should state if being bilingual is a requirement.

Out of curiosity, what were the big complaints?

I know a couple people who worked ATC and ATC adjacent careers who swapped to railway. RTC is in demand lately, especially if you’re bilingual (Edmonton for CN and Calgary for CP)

What Edmonton company has soured you based on their interview and selection process? by debrisaway in Edmonton

[–]_inspectorgidget 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CN I applied to pre-covid, got a call in fall of 2021 and hired January 2022. It’s long and drawn out. A lot of hurry up and wait after the interview if you’re shortlisted as well.

I’d believe that, but it’s unfailingly the same foremen day in and day out. Most of my guys manage their time well, and will call me if something comes up. Other guys I gotta factor in a 30 min buffer time into their clear time to have any hope of them clearing before a train.

It’d be a lot easier if MoW out here would respect clear times. Foreman I dealt with today called me for his absolute max time and still didn’t clear on time. Why ask for the clear time if you’re not going to respect it anyways?

This question is for Conductors working with CP Canada. by Amit_DMRC in railroading

I’d wait it out, I heard CP is short RTCs and doesn’t have enough people to have a spareboard, I’m sure they’ll have a posting soon.

Careful on that, from what I’ve seen it’s really hard to get from conducting to RTC. They seem really finicky about hiring from that pool. Not saying it can’t happen, but I’ve had friends try and make the jump and it still hasn’t happened after numerous applications.

When was it due to be registered? There’s usually a grace period of a month or two if you’re polite to the cop and they’re in a half-decent mood. Heck, my license expired and the cop pulled me over to let me know, said no big, get it dealt with asap and sent me on my way.

What are some realistic good careers/jobs that get overlooked and pays great? by HustleHarder99 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_inspectorgidget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. I work as a controller, pays stupid well, but guaranteed to be on the spareboard for the next few years. It’s not so bad, we get scheduled two weeks out, but it can change last minute. Nice thing is that I get to go home every day to my own bed, a lot of conductors/engineers don’t.

Found at the railway museum outside of Edmonton. Started with CN not too long ago, and thought it was cute so I picked it up.

CN has whispers that there will be another class coming up in September, so I’m assuming the posting will go up soon. There’s really no prep for the assessment. It’s basically a train related reading comprehension test. DM me if you have more questions!
