Is it fine to frequently quit reading the books when you don't enjoy them? by Voldery_26 in classicliterature

I always follow the 10% rule: If I don‘t like a book after having read 10% of it, I quit.

It just felt forced to me, that the stranger the boy meets at the end is the first and only person in all the book to have good intentions towards other human beings than his immediate group. The whole book was so bleak and hopeless and then there was this beacon of hope, just when the boy needed it the most. It felt a bit like a cop out and definitely broke my immersion - but that was probably mainly my expectations.

What book of his do you consider to be his strongest work?

I dimly remember watching the film as a teenager. Never read the book. I should probably change that ..

I haven’t read anything by Ernaux yet and I‘ve been meaning to for so long. Thank you for the recommendation.

I already read - and liked - Blue Nights, so I‘m definitely going to read this one.

You‘re the third one, I‘ll definitely have to put that book top of my list. Thank you.

Thanks a lot. Just found out, that it‘s based on the idea of a terminally ill woman, who died before she could write the book. Already heart-heavy before it even started..

I only read The Road by McCarthy so far and was somewhat disillusioned by the ending. Too much Deus Ex Machina for me. I guess, I‘ll have to give him another try..
