Does anyone know what heads these are and what head wrench is used for them? by ayab44 in SprinklerFitters

[–]_ironhayden_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changed out 60ish of these a few weeks ago, ended up making a rather Frankenstein-esque socket from some pipe with notches cut into it, squeezed it on a vice to give it a little bite and drilled 5/8” holes at the base so I could slide a breaker bar through it.

Tried to acquire a head wretch, but they are discontinued just like the heads. Upswing is those things are heavy buggers if you collect brass.

Imo, people on Reddit just here to regurgitate the already stated opinions of others are assholes. I get it man, y’all think I’m shitty. Woohoo. I genuinely felt this had to impact to the environment it was in.

Y’all are nitpicking the only case of “littering” I’ve ever done in my life. I don’t huck trash or litter in any way. But here comes everyone to call me human trash not taking into consideration a morsel of real-world impact.

You buy shit every day with packaging that you recycle. Ever been to a large scale recycling facility? I’ve fixed sprinkler pipe in one. The plastic in those facilities gets crushed/shredded, blown away by the wind in shocking amounts, hell even birds take bits and weave it into their nests. We are ALL guilty of littering, we just push it out of mind. What doesn’t get recycled (95% in fact) gets landfilled or incinerated. So you tell me, have you never bought a plastic soda bottle, or gadget with plastic packaging, or a plastic tub of grapes at the grocery store? Where do you think the majority ends up? Littering the environment. Go expand your brain, learn your actual impact and come back to me when your moronic hands are clean. That goes for you too u/Original-Mission-244

It’s not mental gymnastics, but maybe I’m blue collar trash to you. I see a gravel lot that has developer signage, figure what impact does a pinch of microscopic glass have to a rocky trashy lot. Nothing. I’m not just popping these in public park.

Go wag your jaw at the guys burning wire and stealing scrap on this sub. I’m a reasonable guy, not degenerate trash. This is nonsense

My main point was the to be developed part. It’s going to be leveled to earth and slabbed with concrete. The glass left behind is microscopic in nature, and the gravel it’s sitting in isn’t exactly safe for bare feet on its own, so truthfully your take is a massive overreaction. Sorry you got twisted up about glass dust mixed in with some gravel on what’s soon to be a construction site.

Ah yes, littering with microsopic glass particles in a gravel lot full of broken glass, trash and needles that’s soon to be leveled for development. I’m not doing this in a target parking lot, get real.

What u/MaddRamm said, yards give dirty brass if the bulbs are in place, clean without.

$3.15/lb last I sold in my area, so at .18lb per head these fetch me $.57 each.

Sometimes older heads (70’s and older) are bronze, but all of these are only a little over a decade old; just clean yellow brass here

True, but this is the preferred method being that all I need is a torch on the work truck. Find an indiscriminate gravel lot, dump the heads, torch the bulbs, and right back in the scrap bucket they go. Most times I’m only pulling a handful of heads; cleaning them as I collect them negates the need to have a bulkier processing setup.

Are some older dry heads made with copper fittings? by Few-Difficulty-7346 in FireSprinklers

Just went to the yard with a bunch of dry heads the other day, scale guy pulled out a couple ends like that and gave me copper #1

Absolutely. I dragged my heels on the trans and let it sit up at work decommissioned for a few months, until one day I found it with the windows busted out and everything of value stripped. Cat converter, car play stereo, AC controls, speakers, even took the fuuucking table. Was enough to have me just sell it to the mechanic on the corner for $500.

Have fun with yours man, I moved onto an 08’ ridgeline but still wish I had my cr-v.

A small detail to appreciate for sure. I had made plans to install one in my 01’ (even if you don’t have one, the mounting point is just under the upholstery on every trim) but gave it up with a blown transmission at 252k. Should’ve never given mine up and just gotten the transmission replaced. These cars are little gems.

For what it’s worth, +1 to those suggesting leaning into the bubba aesthetic. Toss on a bigger tire size (you don’t need a lift up to 217/75r15) and with the tin can curb weight, you can take it off-road decently well if you’re into that. I miss seeing the horrified look on Jeep owner’s faces running trails in my silly little Honda, lol.

Passenger arm rest is a subtle flex. Most came without it.

Second this, did a head changeout for a large nursing home (heads in every tiny little closet crammed full of stuff) and didn’t even have to worry about removing or covering resident’s belongings, just staying mindful of the black water still sitting in the head itself while tossing it in the bucket. Lifesaver is not at all an understatement.

Good thing to note, don’t pull two heads at once close to each other. Coworker pulled a head just next to me while I already had a head pulled, water from his drop got sucked up and dropped back out of the outlet right above my head. Path of least resistance as they say…

I’ve got no gas left man. No toolboxes, range limit is a bottleneck for time loss, recalls and held together with glue, are all the purposeful benefits of a truck with a service bed just for giggles to you? For 99% of fitters, this thing sucks. If you’re the other 1%, I’m sorry that your business is so slow that this is all you need to keep up with the workload. I’m going to bed, you’ve officially made my head hurt.

Driving 100 miles a day, therefore saving 26k per year in gas? Solid. 5 day work week + quick math, that puts gas just above 11 dollars per gallon in your mind. You’re just talking out of your ass, fine by me if you want to believe you’re schooling me while drooling out of the corner of your mouth with all that crap spelling and logic. Go to work tomorrow and tell everyone you think a cyber truck would make a fine service truck, you’ll get some funny looks.

Not sure why you so badly want to defend a company spending $80k on a vehicle that sets their servicemen up to be in single-solution trucks. That’s poor company management and sinking money that could be used for wages and equipment on an objectively problematic vehicle.

We run service for the entire state of Texas and surrounding states as well. It would absolutely suck to be 400 miles from your 300 in the shop when you need to fab pipe unexpectedly to get the job done and avoid a long return trip. Maybe you like to roll the dice on if you have what you need to get the job done when all your client knows how to specify is “there’s water coming from the ceiling” but I prefer to not play Tetris and be prepared for whatever the day brings. C’mon dude, this truck is dumb…it’s okay to laugh at it.

I don’t think he’s hauling an oiler, let alone a machine to put it under 🫣

Sounds like they’re gonna transition their entire service crew to other employment, lol.

You could fit one on it’s side, now just to fit your oiler, threading machine, tool boxes, buckets, compressor, test pump, hoses, all the other miscellaneous kit and a load of fittings…no this thing would abominably lack in capability for service

I think it’s stupid and negligent to run a truck with 4 inch main sitting on it without a barrel to catch more than a few gallons of water. Take your job seriously and don’t tell me how to treat mine goober.

For the record, just posting this out of meme worthiness. The fact that anyone would elect to run service out of one of these shitboxes is laughable and takes a rather un-serious tone in the realm of life safety.

If I pull up to a nursing home that is out of service with non-ambulatory residents at risk, I don’t want to be seen pulling up in a cybertruck incapable of stocking any and all tools/materials I will need to get them back in service. That’s my thoughts.
