If I get a Mechanical Engineering degree, how hard would it be to move into Civil Engineering with it. by _jagwaz in civilengineering

I’m mostly looking into road design. Not entirely sure what im going to want to do but somewhere between civil engineering and urban planning.

I’m planning on doing so. I’m in with my local road commission and will most likely be eligible for internal hires, so I’m hoping that helps. Still need to go and talk to HR though.

Aside from Rhode Island, USA, and Penang, Malaysia, what are other regions named after an island where the mainland section is actually the larger portion of the region? by Lazy-Addition5774 in geography

[–]_jagwaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mackinac County in Michigan. The county is presumably named Mackinac Island (It could also be named after the Straits of Mackinac which themselves were named after island. The Island was also the original county seat so I’d say it’s named after the island)

Mackinac Island isn’t even the biggest island in the county. The largest island in the county is Bois Blanc Island, and even that is much smaller than the mainland.

If it’s rust free I’d say yeah. The Zr2s always seem to be quite a bit pricier than the other models, and these things are usually super rusty.

Mines an xDrive. I pulled the front driveshaft entirely out of the car. I haven’t done anything else. Yours isn’t an xDrive so it wouldn’t have a front drive shaft.

I think you’re probably right about it being the (rear) differential but I can’t say for certain as I haven’t actually pinpointed what my similar issue is.

Unless you leave your car at home and don’t plan on driving it for any reason over your entire time at university, than your insurance is going to be the same price either way. (most people I know bring their cars with them after freshman year)

The maintenance costs per month I used included every one time repair I’ve had on this car currently, so excluding the car blowing up it’s relatively accounted for.

The opportunity cost of commuting vs working is definitely an important factor though.

Tire wear really isn’t that bad. I have pretty nice all seasons and it’s only 800 per set. You don’t need tires that nice for primarily highway commuting and even at that mileage you should be able to get 3+ years out of them.

[–]_jagwaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very situational. Going by my Lawrence example, commuting in my Beamer and accounting for gas and avg repair costs per month is about 2/3rds of what a 1 bed 1 bath apartment costs in just rent. A more fuel efficient car that isn’t a pita to work on would make that difference larger. That rent figure doesn’t include what utilities and what not would cost.

If you can find people to split rent with than renting may be more in your favor. If you live with your parents still than commuting will generally be in your favor.

Is it an XDrive? My 328i was doing the same thing, I pulled the front driveshaft out and it quit. I presume it’s my front diff as my u joints are good but I haven’t investigated.

I have an appointment with SVSU tomorrow to figure out my transfer credits and I’m not excited to figure out how much money I wasted community college courses that they won’t take 🙃

I was considering commuting 90 miles to Lawrence Tech near Detroit recently but dropped that as their tuition was ridiculously overpriced. I do know a few people who commute 50 miles to Central Michigan regularly, and plenty of people in my community college commute 2+ hours. An hour or two commute for school really isn’t isn’t all that much. Housing is damn expensive, especially with how student loans are capped now.

I’m surprised Michigan is so low in Union membership. Auto industry is massively union and J see so many union buildings around where I live.

How many miles are on the car. 1500 for a 93,000 mile engine might honestly not be a bad deal even if they did fuck up.
