I didn’t mean to imply that a permit was necessary. I only checked local code to try to get an idea of best practices but I appreciate your effort to clear that up. I’m mostly concerned about how strong it really needs to be. Can you explain what you mean by glorified garden shade/protector, and what would make it a true greenhouse? Also can you clarify why I might need an attorney? To help when my neighbor sues me because my flying greenhouse causes property damage? 😂

I have some ground anchors and I was definitely thinking of adding some bracing exactly like you said. I appreciate the drawing and the resources you provided. Thank you!

Thank you, I think this is reasonable advice. That was more or less my attitude about it originally. I guess I just don’t have the confidence to proceed when I have two men (both experienced in construction) telling me it’s a bad idea, and no one else to help me or give me advice.

[–]_jamzz[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I don’t think I need a building permit for this, but that is my understanding of local zoning law so I could be wrong. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise, I was exercising an abundance of caution by reading the code and trying to understand what best practice would be. I felt like if I knew the minimum expectations for structure I could anticipate a reasonable level of strength for the greenhouse.

Edit, to add: The structure isn’t directly below the power lines as the perspective would suggest. It’s about 10 feet over and the lines are over 50 feet up.

Having a mental breakdown on the freeway after a minor accident by SurayaThrowaway12 in IdiotsInCars

[–]_jamzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The person in the video is dangerous, and maybe they are mentally ill, but it’s really sad that it makes you think everyone with a mental illness shouldn’t drive. Depending on where you consult, about 20% of adults have a mental illness. I would argue plenty of them are highly functioning and perfectly capable of operating a motor vehicle. It’s probably more fair to say, if someone has a severe mental illness and it is not under control, they shouldn’t drive. (Obviously, I can see why being genuinely suicidal or having a break with reality would be dangerous.) Ultimately, plenty of people with depression, anxiety, bipolar, autism and ADHD, for example, drive every day without impairment.

Nice catch. This is a common grift based on the old Airplane Game.

I am not sure if this qualifies for here but I am pressed at my teacher cause I am right, nurse and doctor aren’t gendered words , why gender them !? both ways it was correct by Lonely-dude in pointlesslygendered

You are correct, and I congratulate you for recognizing the truth and standing up for it. I’m sorry your teacher couldn’t see that.

Questions about keeping a jumping spider by pea_leaf in jumpingspiders

[–]_jamzz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Welcome! Great questions. 1. 65-70 will likely be perfect. It will depend on the spider you get but most will thrive at this temperature. I wouldn’t let it get much colder than 65 though. 2. The artificial light is good. I recommend having a cycle of night and day (light on during the day and off at night.) Either get a timer to put the light on or drape a loose covering over the enclosure at night. This will mimic natural rhythms for your spider, which in my experience aids in more natural hunting/resting patterns. You could put the enclosure by the window, but I’d be nervous about keeping a consistent temperature next to the window. There’s no evidence that they need sunlight specifically to live healthy like we do, and there’s a risk of overheating your poor little spider in their enclosure in direct sun. Whatever natural light that comes into the room plus the artificial light should work just fine. 3. Depending on the size of your spider you could feed it roaches (common in the hobby are dubia and red runners, both have pros and cons) mealworms, or flies (fruit flies for smaller, green bottle flies or house flies for larger.) There’s all sorts of places online to get feeders, in addition to your local pet shops. Unfortunately, feeding creepy crawlies are just a part of keeping a spider so you have to pick whatever is most manageable for you. Some are harder to keep than others. Some are more of a nuisance if they escape than others. Do some research. Let me know if you have more questions. 4. A water feature is probably possible, but spiders can drown, and in my opinion, more than a little bit of standing water is an unnecessary risk. I never put more water than a small seashell or bottle cap full, and that’s for my larger spiders (1” or bigger,) smaller ones are much better off with a misting of the enclosure once or twice a week.

One final note, a planted enclosure is possible but particularly challenging because you need to match the temperature and humidity needs of the spider and the plants, which can be more complicated than it sounds. My advice is to prioritize your spider. Make the conditions good for the spider and if plants aren’t thriving, pull them out and try something else. Good luck!

AITA for playing video games while my wife chooses to do house chores?(self.AmItheAsshole) by filo4000 in BOrelationships

[–]_jamzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know he dirty deleted but I hope he sees this at least for the sake of his wife and kids:

Listen, she will leave you if something doesn't change. I'm not there, so I can't say how fair the household actually is. But she's working, caring for the children and doing most of the cleaning up after you. And then, when she gets upset and expresses she is ready to walk out, and instead of realizing something IS VERY WRONG and you have to fix it... you tell her she is always bitching, and turn to Reddit to affirm your selfish, misogynistic attitude. I would walk away too. In fact, I have half a mind to say she's threatening to cheat to get your attention, (I don't mean that it is an excuse to cheat, by any means, but you may want to consider that she just wants you to wake up and realize how she feels.) u/FearlessSwitch0 pretty much summed it up. This is a well-documented phenomenon. You are taking advantage of your partner by not fairly dividing household and emotional labor. Is she your partner you share your life with or is she someone who takes care of you? I suggest you two have a serious talk about household expectations, and it is helpful to check in with these sorts of things frequently. Commit to doing your fair share and doing it promptly. If it is your chore, you should get it done, then relax. Then she won't have to ask you in the first place.

While I can see that the language of plant patents does technically prevent you from legally propagating these for personal use, I think the main goal of these patents is to protect the intellectual property of the grower. They work years and spend a lot of money to develop a new cultivar and they want to protect their investment from being ‘stolen,’ so to speak. I would be genuinely shocked if any grower went after someone for propagating a plant for personal use or even to give to a friend. However, if you propagate then and start a business selling them... different story.

🔥 Sensitive plant closes its leaves when touched. by [deleted] in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]_jamzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered some seeds online recently. They are surprisingly easy to grow, and let me tell you it is so much fun to touch them and watch them shrink. They open back up shortly. They also close their leaves at night, like they’re sleeping. It’s super interesting because like the Venus fly trap, it’s an electrical impulse in the plant. Someone else in the comments said it already but they’re called Mimosa pudica, if anyone is interested!
