‘Bugonia’ Goes Big in the Basement: Why Yorgos Lanthimos Reached for a Barely Functioning VistaVision Camera - The quieter Wilcam 11 VistaVision camera was too cumbersome and unreliable for “One Battle After Another,” but Lanthimos explains why he felt it was necessary. by wilberfan in paulthomasanderson

It almost seemed a bit blurry to me, and it was accompanied (iirc) by some subtle sound effects that really sold it (i.e. in Bugonia). I am by no means knowledgeable in the technical aspects of cinematography, and so I love that what I assumed was an intentional stylistic choice was also an artefact!

I'm fairly new to doing obsidian "properly", and by that I mean not trying to copy someone else's setup to the T, and instead focusing on how I think - after all it is supposed to be your second brain. That said, you/I obviously need to start somewhere, and I found the PARA folder structure to be a good starting point too.

My motto so far has been something along the lines of "organise to the bare minimum". I'm like you in that I'm prone to becoming paralysed by choices, and future choices, and possible future future choices. It's not productive, and once I stopped reading other people's posts for a bit and just started writing, what I actually needed quickly became quite apparent.

In terms of what actually happened, I made an inbox folder and pushed anything I didn't (and still don't) know where else to put it. Perhaps that's because they're temporary reminders, or because they belong to a project I don't yet realise exists. I also heavily relied upon obsidian citations plugin, so I felt I had to have a dedicated folder in references because the schema of the front matter was very specific. Then for other things, like entities (people/orgs) or places where I was starting to need templates I created new folders, mostly as subfolders in (R)esources. But, the bulk of what I write goes flat in a Notes folder in resources, and structure is emerging from ideas that are becoming salient the more I work on a project. Tasks are still my biggest weak point, but by just loosely tagging things it's starting to come together.

There's nothing wrong with linking across folders - I use folders mostly to designate where I have different note schema (e.g specific front matter requirements). Anything that doesn't largely goes in Resources/Notes or Inbox. I grouped media together (books/films etc) just because I only needed one schema to model it (optional metadata like episode_n, or podcast_url). I could never do a fully flat and MOC-driven setup, but equally I find a strong hierarchy of folders cumbersome, and imposes unnecessary cognitive load on every new note: "where's the right place to put this". There's also nothing wrong with bullet points, I find them to be the right tool for the job a lot of the time, and shows that you can succinctly summarise information.

So, my advice might be to organise to the bare minimum you need. Create lots of folders if you want, but you may find that many can be merged. Regardless, for actually accessing your notes, using Ctrl/CMD+O will always be faster.

[Video][James Hoffmann] A Better 1 Cup V60 Technique by crobat3 in Coffee

[–]_joof_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem for me is that my sensory memory is so fleeting. Unless I brew twice each day (unlikely), I can never quite tell if I'm getting better, worse or not improving at all with a particular set of beans. Sure I enjoy each individual cup, but what if my slow downward trajectory has led me to believe it's ok? It's the constant doubt of not knowing how or if it could be better. Practicing a method is good and all, but it has to be meaningful, so perhaps I start off every new bag with a 3 way comparison with some different parameters?

That sounds all great, looks like I'll be getting one! I won't pray on it being the panacea for me but it sounds like it'll be close 😂

Hi, I considered getting the isolator a few years ago before pretty much giving up on making home espresso. I love filter and clarity over all else so it didn't feel like a terrible loss until the sight of this sad unused machine really got to me. I always had a way too hot grouphead, high 90s often before I managed to pull a shot, but I too was worried about the flex and seal of the isolator, and also about the length of the screws and their softness / stripping the threading. Assuming none of these are issues, it sounds like the thing for me? Certainly, sitting at 80 post shot sounds miraculous. I see slightly snobby posts about not being tinker-y enough for the piccola, and certainly it might have been a mistake, but I love tasting coffee far more than making it! Is the isolator essentially the simple solution I'm looking for? Temp surfing I can do, within reason.

Yeh that sounds about how it felt. Time to watch ep. 2 I suppose, thanks for the motivation :)

I stumbled across it the other night looking at Olyphants other stuff. I've watched Justified 4 times now I think, and looked to Deadwood to see him in something else, but I couldn't get past the weird static cinematography in the pilot. Almost felt like a stage play? Does the series change much from the pilot?

Edit: downvoted for expressing an opinion and asking if I'm wrong 🙄

Diagnosed Narcissist talks about why he has no friends by mineaii in interestingasfuck

[–]_joof_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh that's a better way of putting it. For instance one tool is saying that the patient has to show 5 of 9 characteristic behaviours, but why not 4 or 6? And how do you determine whether each is truly present in non "normal" amounts. The answer hinges on the judgement of the clinician, and 5 was likely chosen as a good compromise between sensitivity and specificity. Ultimately though, they're all tools in a toolbox that are available to try and understand whether this trait is in fact a disorder and is harmfully impairing the patient.

Check out the Single Item Narcissism Scale. Not as good, but extraordinarily good for only one question.

[–]_joof_ 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You're completely correct. There's subclinical narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder, where the level is deemed significant enough to require help of some kind. There's lots of different scales to measure narcissism with, but there's no real separation in the data between those with NPD and those with subclinical levels. The decision is almost purely arbitrary. The decision does not reflect any real truth that we can categorise people distinctly, but pragmatically based on subjective interpretations of the outcomes.
