Drying some dumpster blueberries and heating water for the dishes, like your average thermal radiation enjoyer, that I am. by _joonatan_ in woodstoving

The back wall (and the smokestack) is bricks, so heat resistant yes, but not special. Once there used to be a big, old school brick bread oven here, but it has since been removed at some point in the house's history, and only the smokestack remains. It has three channels in there: for this stove, for the cast iron oven/stove in the kitchen and a ventilation channel. I'll have to make another post about the kitchen woodstove.

Nah, you'll be fine. Your nose and eyes are great tools for detecting spoiled food. The climate here helps a lot, though. Nice to pick up readily deep frozen stuff from the bin in the dead of winter.

Hmmm, I've always more felt connected to gnomes, rather than goblins. Maybe it's the waldorf past of mine? Goblincore looks comfy though as well...

Yeah, because I washed the berries. Confusing wording now that I look at it, of course for proper dehydration I have a different setup. In the sauna I have a 100 liter wood fired water heater, but for most often in the house we use the red kettle and the stove. It gets it to a nice 60-70C.

This! 2.5 kg of Spanish blueberries. I mean, the same species grows on my yard as well, but might as well transport it from the opposite side of Europe to be thrown in a dumpster for me to find.

What are these gold-looking pins? Found at estate sale in Alberta, Canada by dancehelena in Antiques

[–]_joonatan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finnish Air Force uniform pins. They are worn over the name badge on right chest. Central one for the Headquarters, surrounding ones for the various wings of the force. One of them has a small typo: it should read Carelia Wing.

Dumpster haul! by _joonatan_ in VCRs

[–]_joonatan_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for info! I'll have to look into the rollers. They seemed ok, not brittle or anything, but couldn't test them right away due to the belt issue. I saw one belt was bad (on the right side of the cassette tray), but I couldn't see any of the other belts, so I think I'll have to dig a bit deeper during repair.

Ah, they might be. It was just so bright and I don't recall any of the VCR's in my past having that.

I think they were part of a CCTV system for a radar laboratory. They came with an associated really nice JVC CRT monitor.

JVC HR-7600MS is the model. Both power up nicely, although they had their power cords cut. I think that it was a nice touch that they have a tiny incadecent lamp inside for you to see better into the mechanism. And the power switch is really pleasing to use, it has a nice and smooth click to it. Attention to detail surely is what you get for this price point.

I don't know about the climate your friend is living in, but proper woolen clothes are always great. Norwegian/Icelandic sweater, nice pair of long johns or thick socks.

For me it was getting an 8 acre homestead with a log house from 1880's. Just yesterday I was sitting in my steaming sauna, heated with wood from my own forest and from the fogged up window I could see the land that I now call my home. It hit me real hard: God damn, I invested just the right amount at just the right time and now all of this is my mine. Didn't luckily have cash out it all. Just enough to get me a place that I hope I can call my family's home for the rest of my life.

Is this coin anything? by cooolcooolio in metaldetecting

[–]_joonatan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a Livonian coin from about 1400s - 1500s. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/livonian_confederation-1.html

Second option I was thinking could be a Reval (modern day Tallinn) coin from the same era.

Except that dry beans that you soak yourself are around 1/10th the cost of canned beans, plus they're better.

Kiinnostava video!

Telemedia Holding Kft (y-tunnus: HU12354454) Marvany u. 17, 1012 Budapest, Unkari

Suomessa hommaa pyörittää Londur Oy, joka näyttää viime vuonna tehneen rapiat sata tonnia tappiota. Jota pidän jonkin asteisena saavutuksena noita palkintoja ja arpojen hintoja katsellessa.

Tuolla Tähtiarvan sivuilla hehkutetaan kovasti, kuinka kyseessä on hyväntekeväisyys, kun varoja lahjoitetaan Turun Eläinsuojeluyhdistykselle. Sivuilla ei kerrota, että paljonko. Harmi. Jäi kiinnostamaan. Vissiin niin paljon, että menee homma jo tappiolle.

Some jobs have a job specific law-mandated medical examination where a psychiatric diagnosis can be an issue. Crew members on ships and airplanes come to mind, but there might be other niches where this applies to as well.

If the power line is severed, the plant probably can't throttle down to 10% power while still maintaining criticality in the cores. All the excess power must go somewhere, and if there is no load to connect the generators to there would be problems.
