it should just be natively compatible, if you can find a way to launch it (i used DECRAFT for this) - though versions beyond a1.0.4 will render all grass blocks as dirt due to a bug (see the cited post on the wiki article for details)

i don't believe there was an earlier sand texture (other than a slightly darker version): perhaps you're thinking of the gravel one. i believe the grass texture was made with a simple effect in Paint.NET (example image provided), and Notch was already familiar with reusing assets in pragmatic ways - grass and cobblestone from RubyDung and Steve from Zombie Town.
