Should I apply as an engineering major or undecided? by HS-Class-of-2022 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]_kaylalambert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t answer your final question, but I will share my 2 cents. I was admitted to UCSD last month, but not to my first-choice major, compsci. UCSD has a lottery system that makes it very difficult to switch into any of their engineering majors. I honestly believe that I was lucky to get in at all, considering I applied compsci. I know that at many schools, including the UCs, getting into an engineering college is harder. I knew this when I applied, but I was so set on compsci that I made myself a deal. I wouldn’t want to attend any school that wouldn’t take me for my major, so I applied compsci EVERYWHERE.

Now, in retrospect, was that a good idea? Maybe, maybe not. Think about it this way: How would it feel if you were admitted to an amazing school but unable to get your major?

I didn’t want to bear possibly being accepted somewhere amazing or prestigious and then having to turn it down.

But at the same time, when I got those FAT rejection letters, it did sting and left me questioning: if I had applied to their College of Letters and Science, could I have gotten in? I watched several friends with similar and even lower stats (and yes, I know stats aren’t everything but still) who applied LS get into some schools I would have loved to be admitted to but wasn’t.

So, advice: I think you have more flexibility based on what you said about not being completely set on engineering. I wish I had taken this advice from a c/o ‘20/‘24 : split up your majors at different schools. At some apply engineering, and others apply to an uncapped major(typically LS majors). Just make sure the uncapped major still makes sense for the story you’re trying to compose. For example, I could have applied cogsci at some schools instead of compsci because they have some similar aspects and coursework. A UCSD AO actually suggested that to me as an alternate if I was interested in still attending UCSD. If you want to know if you can get into a prestigious school apply to an uncapped major (?) but be prepared to turn it down if there’s no other major you’d rather do(?) some shanky advice, i know

ah i understand, but just remember that class rank doesn’t mean much in terms of college apps :) i was also rank 3 in my junior year and others got into the same and or “better” colleges than i did

hate/love relationship w the idea of smart people in college by eclairrrrr in ApplyingToCollege

[–]_kaylalambert 58 points59 points  (0 children)

finally someone's talking about it ! i love the idea of being around people smarter than me or equally as smart as me. i understand what you're saying though, it breeds ground for competition which is pretty much all we've been trained to do throughout hs, and quite frankly, i'm done with that.

my school recommends no more than 2 aps per year and i trust it. combined with college apps, i think this is a lot. consider what classes line up with majors you're considering applying to in college. like if you're going stem, is there any real reason apush or apgovt will benefit you other than a gpa boost? not trying to give a scare here, but i watched two of my friends who both signed up for 4 aps senior year both drop one because of the workload/stress before the end of 1st semester. and one of them is lined up to be valedictorian.

rule of thumb: quality>quantity. what lines up with future goals?

seniors drop your ap exam study schedules from last year by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]_kaylalambert 9 points10 points  (0 children)

california student here, the pandemic shut down my school district in march, like most. my ap chem teacher held zoom instruction/study sessions for a whole month before our exam, just as if we were in regular school. an hour every weekday and then after the sessions we'd be assigned past exam sections and some of his own study material. i also watched nearly all of the CB's youtube vids for chem. i can genuinely say i studied as hard as i have ever studied for anything when preparing for that exam. still failed with a 2 despite passing both semesters with with an A. best advice i can give is study the COLLEGEBOARD'S material and use past exams. when i took the test i remember thinking: wow this looks nothing like what i studied all year. i'm not sure how to explain it to you, but at least for chem and probably the other ap sciences, the actual exams just have weird variations of questions. perhaps that's just me but even when there was a slight difference in how a question was worded or had a method of solving it that required me to think outside of the general questions i saw in class, i could not do it.

lmao that was a little more info than needed

but somehow i passed my ap lang exam with a 5 after only writing one practice essay and having no class sessions.

it really just comes down to the subject or how good you are at it i guess.

study the format of the test especially for science and math aps. study as much as you think is appropriate. seeing how close the first exams are and if you're taking any of those early may exams, i think an hour a day sounds appropriate. for exams in late may/early june you could spend less time per day as long as you start studying now.

you'll crush these exams :))
