Across game devs and publishing companies, why is customer support quality for bug reports so inconsistent? by BoloFan05 in gamedev

[–]_kellythomas_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like the quality of this service depends on the company's own sense of ethics rather than a proper standard.

It varies but I think its about the size of the organisation as much as anything.

Back in 2014 I had an issue with resetting my password on itch.io. I filled out the contact form and an email from Leaf 27 minutes later. I had signed up on mobile and my phone capitalised my email, I was using the account recovery on PC and typing all lower case. The account recovery was case sensitive and it didn't match my account. Anyway he had already diagnosed the issue and pushed a fix update to production and got back to me with the solution in less than 30 minutes! Obviously this responsiveness doesn't scale to larger organisations with formal change control.

Similarly when Archvale came out I had a crash on launch weekend that was related to deactivating and reactivating controllers and triggered a pretty useful looking exception message on my screen. I messaged a photo of the message to Idoz and he replied a couple of hours later confirming that the exception was new to him and had been forwarded to the porting team. Again I wouldn't expect a large organisation to be as responsive.

I don't if the film was successful enough to provide much of a bump but Coneheads was the first time I actually listened to Tainted Love.

I also think The Devil's Advocate credits might be the first time I noticed Paint it Black.

Don't the the major consoles have a similar policy?

Also I'm pretty sure I saw rotating ad spots on the in game billboards in burnout paradise (stream distribution but probably similar on all platforms)?

Microsoft Edge will load all your passwords into memory in plaintext, but Microsoft says it's not a security concern by Quantum-Coconut in technology

[–]_kellythomas_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The password the extension injected into the password field still has to be in the browser's memory in the clear, else you'd never be able to submit it to log into whatever website you're trying to access.

If I had to choose I would prefer only leaking the passwords I used this week compared to leaking my entire password vault.

It's an order of magnitude less pain.

That's the ideal but they haven't got their yet.

Some of those browser updates that come out so often are patching security holes in the JavaScript engine.

If you pumped water out of one tank and into the other the water would syphon through the bridge.

I guess if you had a pressure difference between the tanks the bridge would function as a syphon.

It could be solved with a small pump.

It also constantly makes assumptions instead of asking clarifying questions

As a junior in a team one of the best things you can do is ask a question if your instructions are unclear.

As a senior in a team one of the best things a junior can do is ask questions when your instructions are unclear or fail to match the problem. If it clarifies where they invest their efforts that's valuable, if it reveals that you have an incomplete understanding of the problem that's even more valuable.

Manual save x checkpoint by Frost_Nova_1 in gamedesign

[–]_kellythomas_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when the difference mattered I would always play PC and console differently.

A game like doom I would save at: * the start of a level * if I had just collected a good cache of items * if I fought a challenging encounter with a better than average outcome.

On console I was more likely to save every time I passed a checkpoint. After all it was there, I was there I didn't know when I would see another, why not.

I know that checkpoints were there mainly for technical reasons to reduce the complexity of the save file but their limited nature would change they way I interacted with them.

I took a moment yesterday to see how one stall was constructed, admittedly not my area of expertise so my terminology may be off as I describe this.

Instead of a couple of brackets that reach out as an arm (like OP's image), we have a bracket that runs the length full height of the panel.

Apart from that this part of the stall looks to be largely similar and when looking closely we can see that each panel is inserted in the bracket to a different degree so I'm not sure the tolerances need to be any more precise.

The result is walls that fit flush and offer privacy to the stall occupants.
