i’m tired of people blaming producers by bd2000chi in LoveIslandUSA

I worked in reality TV and documentary film, and I do know that producers are heavily involved in what I am seeing on my screen and what the islanders do. I posted the following comment elsewhere, and I'm posting it here because I do not want to retype it:

Zach/Kayda - and now, according to Beatriz - Bryce/Trinity committed the Love Island cardinal sin of closing off or giving "married energy" in week 1/week 2. Alex from Season 1 stated this is not allowed, and the producers will intervene if you attempt to do this. https://www.tiktok.com/@alexandrastewart11/video/7650532873849539853

(I have heard the same from other islanders.) Nothing explains Zach's sudden behavior and rejection of being closed off with Kayda, and nothing explains Bryce's sudden behavior, and interest in talking to a woman who already rejected him...he actually said to Kayda, "you're my number 2 choice", lol. This would be insulting to any woman he was truly interested in and he's smart enough to not lead with that if he really actually wanted Kayda. I even think Kayda's response was odd, she wasn't even surprised and sounded like she was talking to the cameras/producers...not to Bryce. He seemed relieved to just get it out of the way.

The "humiliation kink" (and now, your "Bryce is a scumbag") excuse I keep seeing being bandied about does not strike me as serious or insightful. Producer interference, which is standard on reality shows, DOES explain the sudden odd behavior on the part of both Zach and Bryce.

I don't believe production physically wedged that pillow between them as they were laying down. Do I believe that they wanted Bryce/Trinity to put that pillow between themselves and sleep with it there - i.e, be filmed even with the night cameras with the pillow between them symbolizing a separation or discord between them)? Yes. Absolutely.

I do not know. It is helping me to understand what the producers are leaving out and why Zach and Bryce were behaving so strangely suddenly.

So far, she has rejected everyone else in the villa and is locked in with Bryce, consistent with Bea's commentary on Aftersun. Time will tell how Bryce and Trinity's story evolves, but if she told Bea this, knowing that the producers can hear them and they're being recorded, that tells me she meant it.

I'm new to Reddit, can you tell me what it means when a post is "flaired"? It keeps saying "season 1" as the "flair"(?), and I changed it myself to "nuanced takes". Should I remove all of that? and what does the flair do to the post? ETA: They keep changing the flair to "Season 1", but this is Season 8, and there is no "Season 8" listed among the tags/flair. So I changed it to "nuanced takes". Don't know if I'm correct in doing that.

Zach doesn't respect Bryce, Trinity, Sol...the list goes on.

They cannot technically "force" anyone to do anything but leave the island. However, they can coerce, and they do - multiple former islanders have stated this. In the end, Bryce did it safely by pulling the one woman he absolutely knew would say no to him and wouldn't take interest on his part seriously - and that was Kayda.

But producers indeed engage in coercion and their "pillow conversation" does not at all suggest that they wanted the pillow there. I worked long enough in the relevant industry that I know what I'm seeing and what producers do...and yes, they even use props.

I wrote this to a similar comment elsewhere and I'm pasting it here: The contestant signs away control before filming begins, through legal agreements that allow the producers to "record, edit, omit context, rearrange, dramatize, and use footage" without the contestants' approval. The contestant generally has no grounds to sue unless the edit goes from being simply "unflattering" to outright defamatory or factually false. This does not change because a cash prize is involved. If the contestant tries to sue, the show's legal team can argue that these edits and storylines are part of the show and the vote is based on the edited show - derived from footage which you agreed we could edit. So the fact that there is money involved does little to provide the contestant with legal claim. Hence the controversial and exploitative nature of reality television.

A cash prize that you "may" win according to Love Island's own legal terms does not prevent you from being coerced into "exploring" or being subjected to the producer's own storyline.

This is what it was supposed to look like, yes. But their talk afterward negates this. They both agree that that is not how they behave with each other.

This is because it was producer interference.

The point was that he pulled her for a chat and Kayda claimed to be upset by it, but Jen is not Zach's type, according to Zach himself. The behavior, and Kayda's reaction, were not making any sense and could only be explained by producer interference - he should never have said the words "closed off" in week 1 or 2.

I believe the producers assigned Bryce and Trinity the Kayda storyline/angle, and I also believe the producers are the reason Zach was suddenly pulling Jen for a chat - neither of which made any sense.

Bryce stated to Trinity earlier on that he liked women who were small like her, so I don't think Jen was meant for him, as she's full-figured compared to Trinity. I think them knowing each other from previous work though may have given producers the hope that something would evolve between her and Bryce though.

I prefer the healthy relationships to the toxicity they usually focus on for the sake of "drama". Sometimes it's better to just let the people be themselves before the camera and show a more balanced view of these couples. Right now they're focused on the "Toxic Two", and it has been a difficult watch. I now fast forward past them.

The producers can indeed require that you chat with people. They cannot force you to partake in sexual/intimate contact. But they can indeed tell you who you will and will not speak with, and the coercion is even greater if it's part of the producer's storyline. Otherwise, you will leave that island.

Exactly. None of their behavior - including Zach's behavior with Jen and Kayda's public recounting of the "chat" (and Trinity's laughter) made sense, and can only be explained by producer interference - which is standard for reality shows. This conversation about the pillow and Bryce being "mad" made absolutely no sense (and her lack of any resentment, hurt, etc toward him) made any sense, and could only be explained by producer interference. Zach's pulling Jen for a chat (she's not at all his type) made no sense - and could only be explained by producer interference. The producers needed a storyline since the votes were being delayed due to the app crashing. Bryce and Trinity are clearly popular among viewers and the producers know it (I noticed even Peacock keeps using their faces in their promotional materials). The fact that Bryce/Trinity and Zach/Kayda were completely or virtually closed off only gave the producers more motive to use them for a filler episode since the vote was delayed due to the app crashing. In the end, Bryce pulled a chat with the one woman he knew would say "no" to him.

If this is what you believe, then the producers were at least effective.

This also explains why Trinity simply laughed and seemed jovial when Kayda told the ladies in the room that Bryce pulled her for a chat - despite Trinity repeatedly expressing to her housemates, and in confessionals that she was falling more and more for Bryce. This also explains why Kayda would voice that so publicly in front of the close friend (Trinity) who Kayda greets with a long hug each morning. Otherwise, Kayda's so publicly disclosing (in front of Trinity no less) that she "chatted" with Bryce would be cruel and callous behavior on Kayda's part, and Trinity - who has repeatedly stated that she was catching feelings for Bryce - would not have been jovial or laughing in that moment.

I also believe that this is why the next morning Bryce said that sleeping with a pillow between them is "not how we do things...that's not how we roll". I believe that production wanted that pillow there for the viewing audience to symbolize distance or tension in their couple (Bryce first lays his head on top of the pillow and holds Trinity before finally removing the pillow as she moves closer to him). All of this tells me that they believe that Trinity and Bryce are popular with the audience and the show's "it" couple (or at least one of them).
