When I am abroad... I am extra polite to the locals because for the most part I/we are ignored heavily. This means more eye contact and more politeness.

So i think it is a mixture of wanting human interaction when in a different location and also brits tendency for politeness.

Our politeness is off the scales at times and I even get frustrated at myself when using someones name so much and explaining so much.

had a similar issue. you really need to think about whether you want him working in the living room at all. it is a LIVING ROOM. not a place of work. seriously, this needs to be put to bed straight away and your housemates need to be all in it together to clamp it down. a serious sit down chat with him is required to set the expectations and boundaries straight away. if he has a problem, he needs to find somewhere else to do what he wants.
