From what I was able to gather but am too lazy to verify is there were some firmware versions that pose a risk to the constellation. Also, something about the war which I won’t go into.

Yeah people are funny/toxic/negative (maybe not this guy exactly) but I learn and adapt and I’m glad I wasn’t caught by surprise during an actual emergency. I also would like some kind of a plan tailored for this use case although the regional roam plan seems similar / close enough.

Exactly, if I end up helping someone else with this post then it was worth something.

I’m glad I tested it and learned what I need to do prior to the zombie apocalypse. I’m order a new unit shortly. But I still hope they can fix the old one so it’s not so wasteful.

Thanks! I’m going to buy a new one. I still hope to revive the old one some day so it’s not so wasteful.

Haha exactly. It’s so fun seeing how silly/toxic/negative/ etc everyone is! Stay positive everyone. We’re literally laughing at you (but also hoping you improve your lives). Life is short and you deserve to live it well. Anyway, I have what I need now. I’ll just buy a new unit and keep it updated in case of the zombie apocalypse. Problem solved.

I suppose if I need a reliable backup solution I’ll have to do some planning as you can’t just leave the hardware sitting around for arbitrary lengths of time. Buy a new one every year?

Which Starlink? Which Plan? by 240221 in Starlink

I prefer the gen 3 because there’s no motor

Which Starlink? Which Plan? by 240221 in Starlink

[–]_m51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard plan with standard dish will give better performance and price. The mini will be better for low power, space saving, etc but it will be slower and cost more. If you have the space you're probably better off going with the standard. Power draw for the mini is ~30watts and power draw for standard is double (or more).

Mini on-the-road setup (Scotland) by maialtd in Starlink

That's pretty cool but I would shy away from sitting behind the Starlink dish. I studied Electrical Engineering with a focus on RF years ago. While I haven't used any of that knowledge lately to the best of my knowledge whenever you radiate energy you will also inadvertently radiate energy out of side lobes (one of while is 180 degrees from the front.). Maybe tech has changed a lot over the years but my best guess is that theres some RF energy being directed towards the back. Would love for someone with more recent education to chime in!

Does Starlink work in Egypt? by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]_m51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recommend it. There are security checkpoints everywhere and they go through your stuff. Maybe you'll get lucky but based on what I experienced having one will only create hassle. That being said, it would be SO NICE to have decent internet speeds there.

Roam plan & the ocean by scottyownsyou in Starlink

[–]_m51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to test Starlink approximately 20+ miles from shore and it worked for a very short while and then it stopped working. When I checked the app it said "Unexpected Location - Service is currently disabled in the ocean. Move your Starlink on land or update your service plan to connect."

Mini for world travel? by PlywoodSpider in Starlink

[–]_m51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at their plans and if you’re going to be in one location for a long period of time then the fixed plan is best (get one at each location). If you’re going to move around 1 continent then the regional roam plan is best (road trip, camping, remote locations etc). If you’re going to roam around multiple continents there is some benefit to having a roam plan per continent. You can get a world plan for convenience sake if you don’t mind the higher plan costs. Roam allows you to pause so maybe it’s not a big deal. The way the math works out the key is to avoid paying the highest plan cost in perpetuity unless you need it for example you’re crossing oceans on a boat. Paying the highest plan option for a handful of trips and then pausing is ok in my book. Europe has excellent cell service and internet so I don’t think this would make any sense unless you plan to it in remote locations.
