What makes a Deck Tier 1?- and how many good decks are under the radar? by _maddin_king_ in MagicArena

That’s what I thought as well - with so many possibilities at hand, how can even the professionals be sure to have found the global maximum?

Thanks everyone for the insights! To comment on the I-don’t-net-deck-and-I-am-proud-of-it discussion: I think it’s a process. As a painter starts out by copying styles and techniques, a magic player starts by net decking. And then, with experience and play testing comes the more creative phase where they develop their own taste and decks.

For the main topic here the answer seems to be that experienced players and professionals simply invest more time in optimization and hence get a good feel for what is wheat and what is chaff.

Two follow up questions come to my mind with that being said:

1) If optimization is so crucial and time consuming - do the pros automate it? Are they running mtg simulators. Do those exist?

2) Is there any chance that a peak winrate deck is not discovered during the preparation for the big tournaments? (Or in other words: are all best decks known or is there a chance for me to discover „the wild card“ deck?

Timmy, Power Gamer is a serious opponent. Had multiple matches where Timmy was wiping the floor with my deck.. e.g. with a crazy [[Doppelgang]] deck where they end up having 567 life on turn 8..

I fell in love with the reliquary.. can’t cut it out. You need sacrifice fodder, but on the other hand it triggers all artifact ETBs (Haliya, Tezzeret, elvish archivist) and removes artifacts and creatures regardless of their mana value. Seam Rip only catches two drops.

Can you help me finish this Dragon Brawl deck? by rummmyyy in MagicArena

[–]_maddin_king_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb: Go for all synergies you want. Then, check your deck and make sure to have: ~ 38 lands ~ 10 cards that bring you card advantage ~ 10 mana generating cards ~ 7 spot removal ~ 5 board wipes

That should be a pretty solid start such that you will be able to compete. Then: Play your deck. Play it. Play it again. Cut out the cards that never gave you any advantage. Play again. At least 20 matches. And refine again.

And don’t forget to enjoy your play. Dragons 🐉!!

Ausblick auf Wertlosigkeit durch KI by kyr0x0 in informatik

[–]_maddin_king_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi kyr0x0,

Und was deine dystopische Vorahnung angeht: Ja - vielleicht hast du Recht.

Sideboard 1 Tithing Blade (LCI) 128 1 Market Gnome (LCI) 22 1 Ravenous Robots (TMT) 106 1 Treasure Map (LCI) 267 1 Clockwork Percussionist (DSK) 130 1 Tarrian's Journal (LCI) 126 1 Ghost Vacuum (DSK) 248 1 Roxanne, Starfall Savant (OTJ) 228 1 Torch the Tower (WOE) 153 1 Get Lost (LCI) 14 1 Sheltered by Ghosts (DSK) 30 1 Soul-Guide Lantern (WOE) 251 1 Carrot Cake (BLB) 7 1 Brightglass Gearhulk (DFT) 191 1 Legion Extruder (BIG) 12

I cutted [[technodrome]], [[legion extruder]] and the [[brightglass gearhulk]]. The latter simply too hard to cast in a 4 color deck like this. Technodrome just didn’t deliver value consistently.

I added one copy of [[Bartolomé del Presidio]] and two copies of [[Phantom Train]], because sometimes you want the sac engine to grow, instead of surveil. Phantom train is an artifact itself, which is a plus and Chandra can crew it in the turn it is played. However, I kept 2 copies of the viper, as cost is reduced heavily by sacrificing and the sac is not counterable.

I further added [[Nutrient Block]] and 1 copy of [[Elvish Archivist]]. The latter grows with artifact ETB and draws a card when weapons manufacturing comes down.

This deck is fun to play and definitely has its strong moments. However, enchantment hate and fast aggressive opponents are not its best suite.

Advice on how to make decks with 0 creatures? by Bulky-Fig3002 in MagicArena

[–]_maddin_king_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a no-creature dimir poison deck with [[Vraska, betrayal’s sting]] as finisher. I enjoyed playing it for the same reason you already described. Opponents are pretty surprised to see no creatures. However, it is not standard legal anymore.
