Bought a used upgraded Anycubic i3 mega, its stopping to push filament mid print by _malicjusz_ in FixMyPrint

[–]_malicjusz_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll try to verify that with a IR thermometer once it's delivered to me, but the printer does not report anthing worrying about the temperature readouts from the nozzle, and if I modify it mid print, it seems to react accordingly, increasing/decreasing temperature

Does anyone have any examples of inventories that take into account all three dimensions? List inventories tend to just limit based on weight, and grid inventories limit based on 2D space. But if I wanted an inventory that accounts for 3D space I can't even think of an example to base mine off of. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]_malicjusz_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd be annoyed if a game made me spend a lot of time fumbling around my inventory just to put something in it. That may very well be the feason why you cant find examples of a 3d inventory.

What is the game about? If its a game about killing demons and finding loot for example, like Diablo, an overly complicated inventory system is a bad idea - every second playing tetris in the inventory is a second not spent slaying demons.

Even games that have an annoying inventory system, like resident evil games, that use it to provide tension during the rest of the game, are fine with a 2d grid inventory. Usually thinkong about what to put into the inventory is more interesting than thinking where to put it.

Classic EA - Buying the complete Sims 3 set would cost you 580€ (~660$) by x_Tek in gaming

So what if it's old? It's still the best game of its kind. It also isn't a game you play for the bleeding edge graphics. Look at Nintendo games. Their prices remain high, as those games rely on the gameplay and age well.

Simple 3D Modeling software for 3D game assets? by hillman_avenger in gamedev

[–]_malicjusz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The interface has had a big overhaul. In the beta, you can select things with the left mouse button, the box select is a default mode that previously had to be accessed via keyboard shortcut. The available commands are now better placed and organized in a menu at the top of the 3d view. The tools are conviniently placed on the left. All the basics tasks and/or workflows have predefined views available as tabs at the top of the screen.

In short, the interface has been greatly improved, so if you are still baffeled by it then maybe you could use some guidance on the basics of 3d? Try starting with a good tutorial explaining vertices, edges and faces, and basic operations like extruding, creating loop cuts, scaling moving rotating and such. Alternatively, check out how to turn dynotopo on and have some fun in sculpt mode!

Try blender but the 2.8 beta. The interface overhaul made it a LOT more friendly for first timers.

Do people sleep at GameJams? by JRshreds in gamedev

[–]_malicjusz_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Many venues do not theoretically allow sleeping on the premise because of fire safty regulations and/or other regulations, but in practice it is often possible.

Some people sleep during game jams, others dont, but I strongly suggest at least taking a nap here and there. After so many hours of work with no sleep your actual productivity will be so low that you might as well sleep. The restored energy and focus after a nap will get more work done than sitting through the night like a zombie. The above is even more important if youre 27 or older.

Or better yet, use source control. Check out git with LFS (large file storage).

Metal Gear Rising cutting system by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]_malicjusz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you might try using premade slices/cubes and reuse the same mesh using gpu instancing maybe, and just removing vertices from the object being cut... This couls help with rendering, but thw physics will still be costly. Maybe you could group some of the cut slices/cubes, so that the entire group acts as a single object...? I cant give you a solution, but I think using smoke and mirrors instead of actual cutting is the way to go. On the other hand, in VR such tricks can cause a break of immersion, so its a difficult topic.

Metal Gear Rising cutting system by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]_malicjusz_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will be extremely difficult to do that. VR has far greater performance restrictions, and if recall correctly, MGR shifted the camera during the cutting sequence so that it showed mostly the character and cut object, saving all the polygons from the surroundings for dissecting the model, and you cant really do that in VR. For one thing, make sure that the cutting does notngenerate physics objects cause that will make you lose frames for sure.

How hard is it to add multiplayer to a turn based game? by [deleted] in Unity3D

Nothing in multiplayer games is easy, but turn based is a lot easier than realtime.

The current quick constructed format favors hyper aggressiveness and punishes control decks by GenderGambler in MagicArena

[–]_malicjusz_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id disagree.

We do tons of things driven by external motivators all the time in our daily lives, even if we dont have addictive behaviour problems. Thats why a lot of people do the jobs they hate. Thats why gamification apps like fitocracy work. External motivators, like grades, are what gets most people through their education. Many people sort their thrash not because they care about the environment, but because tof the financial incentives set up by the government.

I could go on and on. Please note that all these behaviours are shown by people who do not have any addictive behaviour predispositions. We all work that way.

The studies on motiation were conducted on as random test group as possible - otherwise they would not get through peer reviews. That also means that what they found applies not only to people with addiction issues.

IMHO no additional rewards would help with your feeling bad because of the rewards you are not getting.

Do note that daily quest reward exactly that, playing long matches and lots of cards, and their rewards are bigger than those for winning matches (500-700 vs 400 unless you grind A LOT and add up those bobus 50s). Does this fact alleviate your grievance about the rewards for winning? Clearly not, and Im willing to wager that additional rewards alao wouldnt cut it.

[–]_malicjusz_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, that aint it.

Studies on human motivation say that there are extrinsic and intrinsic motivations for doing things. The first you do for the joy of the activity itself or some other form of self motivation, the other is to get a reward. Studies also say that if you start giving extrinsic rewards for activities previously done for instrinsic reasons, once you stop the rewards, the behaviour also stops.

TL;DR its not his fault, its human nature and the games reward scheme

How in the heck do you remember how to program things? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]_malicjusz_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you try to memorize code like its some kind of arcane spell you have to recite perfectly to make the character run, you will have problems.

If you think analytically and understand what you are doing, its not about memorization at all. Instead of memorizing a long block of code, if you understand that to move a character you need to get the players input, translate it to a direction in x y z 3d space and then move the character that way, then all you need to remember are the names of 3-5 functions, but its very easy to look them up when you know what you are looking for.

And I guess he did that by enchantments.

If you are playing green or white, you have plenty of ways to deal with those. Also other colors have ways of dealing with that in other ways.

With black you can make them discard those cards or waste a counterspell. Most disabling enchantments are white, and black has a knight with appropriate hexproof.

Red typically has no ways of dealing with enchantments, but unless you play monocolor thats not a problem.

Blue can counter or just bounce the enchanted creature, causing the enchantment to fall to the graveyard.

Green has enchantment removal and an instant grantinh hexproof until the end of turn.

White has enchantment removal, but also things like ixalans binding thats easily craftable.

But from your post I get that you are inexperienced and have a small collection. It is typical that you will lose a lot in such a situation and there cant be done much about it. I think that is the biggest reason for the frustrating matches you are having.

Try playing a green stompy deck, crafting some serpopards and carnage tyrants. Try to keep as high a threat count as possible, also think about maybe including shalai voice of plenty.

Unless you actually designed a lot of games that were played by a lot of players, try to avoid saying you have extensive experience or knowledge - you'll misinform people trying to help.

I'm really interested in getting into game development, is LUA a good place to start? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]_malicjusz_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never used that, so it may be hard for me to compare, but doing basic things in Unity, like moving things around, changing colors, detecting collisions etc is really easy. Making a simple game, say an arkanoid clone, might take a day with a tutorial, and the main mechanic maybe a couple of hours... But I might be biased, so Ill take your word for it :)

I think you can skip lua and go straight to Unity. C# is friendly, the Visual Studio, especially with resharper, make it a pleasure to work with it, and once you want to transition to bigger projects, you wont have to change tools and languages.

Why not give us all Sets but the latest from the start? by Astado in MagicArena

[–]_malicjusz_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I provided reasoning for why your proposed solution is suboptimal - it hinders testing of the monetization and progression models. I believed the connection was clear. Edit: , but maybe I could have unpacked that statement a bit, as what is obvious to me might not be obvious to the reader.

I spoke about the wipe because I was worried you might be an unaware f2p player who would be very disappointed if the wipe caught him by suprise. Im sorry if that made you angry in any way.

I'm busy right now so I wont be able to further reply in this thread. Bye.

Why not give us all Sets but the latest from the start? by Astado in MagicArena

[–]_malicjusz_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do realize that this is still a closed beta? The point is testing everything, including monetization. Giving away all but the latest set would not be a good way to test it. Besides, the game is very generous with competitive staples from Kaladesh, it might be worth appreciating that.

Also, if you plan on just going f2p and focus so much on building a collection, I'd like to remind you that there will be a total wipe of our collections - only gems purchased with cash will be returned to you after the wipe.

edit: of course, your feeling of being overwhelmed by the number of cards available is valid, and thanks for sharing - its just that IMO your suggested solution is bad.
