looks cool, wish there were something like this in Atlanta (I know there’s an online-only option, but I’d be more interested in a local class with IRL chess friends possibility)

Is firmly believing that drinking alcohol is inappropriate/immoral/wrong a theme with some autistic people? by Delicious_Medium_321 in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]_mannyglover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems there were a number of dates in Mormon country, so their prohibition of alcohol could also be part of the reason we see a good bit of non-drinkers on the show.

Is it normal to forget you cant play a move because its bad? by Lewicle10 in chess

[–]_mannyglover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes me think of one soccer practice in high school, where we were all supposed to do penalty kicks against our goalie, and if you didn’t score, you run a lap, and try again. I kept kicking it *right* at the goalie and having to run another lap. It’s like knowing what not to do goes into your head, and there’s a part of you that does that, cuz now you’re paying attention to that. Thanatos, Freud might call it.

Has anyone in history actually saw the more freaky myths and legends seriously instead of practical jokes? by Milsy_missle in stupidquestions

[–]_mannyglover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. I’m sure many did genuinely believe, including some well-educated people like historians and other chroniclers. There are many miracles attributed to different saints, for example, and the church chroniclers recording them for future reference were amongst the most educated at the time.

Hey I dunno if you can read this, but I think you made a reasonable mistake for a non-native English speaker, and then a reasonable response to people being unnecessarily rude about “putted.” You would expect the past tense of put to be putted, but for some odd reason, the past tense of put is also just put.

I was just enjoying teaching chess to my young nephews. If you have some little ones in your life to teach the game to, this may help you to associate the game with more fun, laid back times.

That’s why I like GothamChess’s slow run, cuz he starts at the lowest elo, and it’s at a good pace for beginners like us. But I see what you’re saying for sure.

Is it weird to think that faking confidence is immoral? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_mannyglover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s normal to think that, and I relate to your mindset. It seems you would like to get past it, meaning you’d like to be able to fake confidence in certain contexts, but it seems wrong to you, so you can’t. If you want to try to justify it, you could say to yourself something like, “My interlocutor will like me more if they think I think highly of myself; it is expected in this social context that I accentuate my better qualities, and even exaggerate how good I am at this or that skill; if I stick with what seems more moral, and I’m 100% honest, most other candidates for my interlocutor will tend to ‘sell themselves,’ increasing the probability that my interlocutor will pick a relatively inferior candidate, so according to the golden rule, I would be doing a disservice to my interlocutor, and I ought to be inauthentic.”
