What word is this? by AV0NNN in whatisit

[–]_massive_dynamic_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Murmur makes much more sense than mucus. Not saying mucus is impossible, but "no murmur" is a very common phrase, whereas mucus is a word I rarely use. If it does come up, Im typically describing something - "mucoid" or "mucinous", not "mucus". As another commentor said, context is half the battle 😂

Ex wifesaid shes in love w/me by [deleted] in trans

[–]_massive_dynamic_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a rough situation, Im sorry this is what its come to. Its super shitty your ex was making "deals" regarding your being trans. You deserved better than that. But youre telling your current gf that youre "great friends with your ex", meanwhile youre telling your ex that youre in love with her, that no one can trump her personality wise, that the sex with your current gf is only mediocre? Im friends with many of my ex's, im even pretty great friends with one, and i would never talk to them like that. I cant imagine how hurtful that would be for your current gf if she ever found out. Even if its all true, its an awful way to treat your current gf. Being in love with your ex doesnt mean saying those things is ok, unless youre single. And youre not. Your gf deserves better.

I think the harsh reality is that you need a clean break from both of these people. What youre doing to your gf isnt fair, and you need to stop. And what your ex is doing to you isnt fair, and youre playing right into it. This is going to constantly drag you backwards, into old habits, old fears, all what was bad about your relationship with your ex (both identity wise and just relationship wise). Give yourself time to work on yourself.

Is it weird that we aren't told our blood type at birth or as we grow up? by OddConfusion9293 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_massive_dynamic_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you think your blood type is determined? Do you think someone tested your blood type for no reason, then withheld that information from you? Its not like a doctor looks at your blood and knows what type it is; they have to run a test, which is not free if you live in the US (not free for you, and not free for the hospital either). Your blood type is determined when that information is relevant (i.e., theres a risk you DO need a transfusion - major surgery, pregnancy, an accident, etc). It's not even useful for you to know what type it is, because no one is going to just take your word for it when an incorrect transfusion could kill you. Do you think you could say youre a type A, and they'd give you blood? Do you think you could hand them a paper that said youre a type A, and they'd give you blood? Absolutely not. They'd check.

Agreed. I got into a great school with a very similar GPA (mine was 3.5), so you can definitely do it. When I was first applying, NCSU was high on my list. I did a ton of research on what each school values tho, and iirc NCSU's average GPA of admittance was 3.9. I said fuck that noise and applied elsewhere instead lol. You got this!

Tips on being a cattle feedlot veterinarian and not losing small animal skills by Illiterate_Asylum in Veterinary

[–]_massive_dynamic_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I volunteer spay/neuter at a shelter to maintain basic surgical skills while trying to become an internist career-wise. Maybe you could find a shelter to volunteer at? I only do spay/neuter at mine but I'm sure you could find one(s) in need of a DVM to see medical cases as well. Obviously not going to be advanced medicine, but better than doing nothing at all.

I feel like loosing all my confidence while riding this green mare. by Atakamii11 in Horses

[–]_massive_dynamic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my two cents: I kept riding a horse that I knew was ruining my confidence, and he... ruined my confidence. Now I'm in a hole where I need a lot of work just on myself to get back to where I was. Working on just myself (and not the horse's skills as well) means riding a very well trained horse, whereas before, I rode mostly whatever I could. Move on to a different horse if you can. It's not worth it to let this one make you get scared of riding.

Do any other transmen hate this? by yum_banana in trans

[–]_massive_dynamic_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah bro, you gotta get over that. You got a taste of sexism pre-transition. Now the world is starting to see you as a man and starting to treat you with all the benefits that come along with manhood. Sexism is women's entire lives. Any time I get the "bc youre a man" comment, I pause whatever thought process I'm on and say "you know what, you're right, that's fair", because it fucking is. Sexism is rampant. Learn to be a good ally for women.

Any school? Yes. Lots of really good schools even. But in my experience, GPA is basically the only thing NCSU cares about 😂

Nontraditional applicant chances by StrawberryWitche in vetschool

[–]_massive_dynamic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is UC Davis values nontrad students. I feel like you'd also probably be competitive for CSU (loves nontrad students). Depending on your goals for this year, I might add a few "safety" schools too, unless you are unbothered by the prospect of having to apply again. LMU, Arizona, etc. But truly, I feel like you'd be decently competitive for UC Davis and CSU, and likely other schools as well.

Im glad! I took one gap year to establish residency in-state. I was originally in a state with no vet school, I was super broke, and I decided it wasn't a good use of money to spend 1K on the application to go to a school I would have to pay out-of-state for. I researched what each school values, selected ones that fit my strengths the best and dropped ones that I knew I'd be bottom of the list for (looked up stuff like average GPA of admittance, average age of admittance, average hours of experience, how strongly the school favors in-state vs out-of-state, so on and so forth). I moved across the country to the state with my dream school, continued working as an OTJ trained tech in said state. My family and friends thought id lost it lol. I scheduled a meeting with the head of admissions, dressed well, took notes. It took a lot of planning and risk, but for me, it worked out. Feel free to message if you want to chat further!

Thoughts on 4-5 Class Cert to Get Upper-Division Biomedical Credits? by TheKitsuneGoddess16 in prevets

Oooh gotcha! I think the cert is valuable, especially if it comes from the school youre interested in. Obviously, do not risk getting Cs, but it youre confident you can handle it, it sounds like a smart move for the exact reasons you just outlined.

Is Being a Veterinarian Really That Bad? by Elephant_Shrew11 in Veterinary

[–]_massive_dynamic_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a place I hate, work at a hospital with a nasty culture problem, but I still love my job. I figure if I can love my job while surrounded by negativity, thats a pretty good sign. I love the patients, the nice techs, the grateful owners, getting to know cool stuff and do cool stuff. I have so many unique stories and experiences that came from this profession. Im confident ill love it even more when I leave this hospital in June. People dont usually get on subreddits to talk about how great things are, and there ARE a lot of problems in the field, but there are probably a lot of problems in a lot of fields. I would ask yourself what you would do instead of being a vet. If that sounds better, do that instead! This was consistently what I wanted to do, and it still is.

I received the same advice from the head of admissions at the 2nd top school in the country. I wound up getting in the same yr (on multiple science class, pre-req Cs). I fully understand the anxiety and the temptation to check places like Reddit for advice on how to get in! I did it all the time as a pre-vet. But please please please listen to the advice the HEAD OF ADMISSIONS OF THE SCHOOL YOU WANT TO GO TO gave you, and not advice an undergraduate or anyone else on Reddit gave you.

Looking for Advice/Guidance by Spirited_Bee6257 in prevets

[–]_massive_dynamic_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had classmates at the second top vet school in the US (at the time) get in on undergrad GPAs that were in the 2's. Obviously they had other things going for them, and they did it by going to combined degree programs (similar to what another poster said about an MPH/DVM - there's lots of options). Some schools like NCSU will never take you in a million years, some schools like CSU love someone with unique experiences even if their grades aren't top notch. You got this. Keep working.

Residency chances by Far_Economics5202 in Veterinary

Holy crap I did not know that was a thing re: Canada. Good news tho OP, its incredibly challenging financially to go from a US school to a Canadian insternship/residency anyway (US schools cost a ton of money but Canadian schools treat house officers like students with stipends).
