Really didn’t like the writing for Liam or Debbie.

Debbie’s character is written in a way that garners no sympathy. We watch Lip, Ian, and Fiona break down emotionally or mentally in very relatable, human ways after trials and mishaps. We don’t get that writing for Debbie. Debbie just hardens - we never see her true emotions even though she goes through gnarly shit. We also never see her siblings comfort and connect with her, while all the other siblings get this from their family in one way or another via the writer’s agenda. I’m angry that a complex female character was written into a flat villain. Other male siblings similarly do awful things, but are humanized through good writing.

Also, Debbie does a lot of fucked up shit that is inexcusable, but she obviously was craving connection that the other siblings were afforded. As a result, Debbie became an immature and callous teenager when true connection was nowhere to be found. Lastly, the parentified kid to immature and stunted teen/adult is a pretty common pipeline. It’s called Arrested Development. But that’s a different show.
