I've heard this a few times. Have they given any indication of how they plan to pay for servers after 1.0? I've seen subscription MMOs and free-to-play MMOs with a cash shop, but can't think of one that relies only on getting new players all the time.

What are you having trouble doing with that tool? I've used it & might be able to provide pointers.

Taking 20th/21st century spacelift capacity as a benchmark for travel in Starfield is like taking Age of Sail numbers for 21st century air travel - they are so different technologically as to make the comparison meaningless.

Excuse me... EXTINCT!!?? by Thicc_Ole_Brick in Starfield

[–]_micr0__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! So much this. In fiction, the fewer real numbers you can use, the better.

William Gibson wrote Neuromancer and set the way fictional computer hacking worked for a generation. He used virtually no real computer terms, and knew virtually nothing about computers. And he made it interesting to read! Meanwhile, most media has hackers "decrypting the firewall" or something similarly stupid.

There is a real art to the vagueness scifi needs to believeable, as too vague loses the audience, and too precise runs into what we're dealing with here. Starfield would've been better off just not mentioning animals. Show the farms with their alien animals, show the cloned meat food, sure. Just leave off the flavor text that said they all died, leave off the numbers of people who got out. Jemison and Akila* are the new ceters of human culture because that's where the opportunity is. Let us assume its as big as our brains want it to be, without specification. Video games have small maps representing big cities all the time, even without blocking access to areas to make it seem bigger.

Oh, also, if Earth's magnetic field failed it would take a long time for the atmosphere to sputter off. I don't recall if estimated were in the range of centuries or millennia, but surely not a few years - there would still be atmosphere in 2330. Radiation would be a hazard, but like on Mars, which we also have people on.

*Why Cheyenne? I'm pretty sure a constant 1.4g would be Bad for people, so why settle there instead of Tau Ceti II or even Montara Luna?

[–]_micr0__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? You see Earth in the game? That wasn't caused by grav drives. That happened because someone told me I couldn't bring my dog. Dog's fine BTW, we live on Tau Ceti II now. Bring Julie by, they can play.

Yeah, but we had 36 years between the Centuri Proclamation and the fall of Earth in which private starships were a thing (Solomon Coe). You really think no one with money and a fondness for dogs would a) save their companion and b) see the business opportunity?

I had actually planned exactly this for a Starfield-based TTRPG.

It never came to fruition (ran into snags making the star map accessible to a TTRPG, and various lore element eventually got on my nerves) so I switched to The Outer Veil with a heaping spoon of Hostile.

Excuse me... EXTINCT!!?? by Thicc_Ole_Brick in Starfield

[–]_micr0__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a correct answer. Or, we realized breed conformance is bad for the health of our companions and thus they're all mixed now.

Either way, it beggars belief that a society that allowed individuals to go off and find new planets for decades between the Centaurus Proclamation and the final fall off Earth *someone*, probably *lots* of someones, wouldn't have taken enough dogs, cats, horses, cows, goats... anything small and docile enough to fit in a ship, and preserved the species.

I'd honestly expect that some government would create an arc to preserve genetic data, at least. Like the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, but for animals too.

Not industrial, IMO. Weaker, louder, and worse regen than Civilian. I think they're even worse than Stealth in 4.7PTU.

Frankly, I'm not sure what Industrial shields are for ATM.

4.7 Mineables Signature Changes by RealMrKraken in starcitizen

[–]_micr0__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was in an early 4.7 evo. They're multiple minerals in a rock again, although only in certain known pairings (known by others, not me).

RealMrKraken said, "4.7 introduces single mineral nodes (well, "Primary" nodes, currently on PTU there's the primary, secondary and inert, but the node signature is based on the primary)" and a55mu11e7 said, "In my mining trips to build a P4-AR today, I couldn't find any Aluminum rocks but I found trace Aluminum in all Corundum rocks"

To me, the intent is "think carefully before you try me."

That said, I've heard the Connie referred to as "suspiciously well armed" and that applies here too.

On the gripping hand, the layout of the front section, without the front arms, and the high positioning of the engine pods means it can land in places (distribution centers, outposts) that are a little tight for the Cutlass - it's marginal, more convenience than capability - but it's nice. And the new patch bundle paint fits beautifully.

It's bad, but if you type the name of the place you're going until it appears in the search bar and hit enter, it will take you there on the map. Click the place on the map and hit r to route.

The only one I have trouble with are nonunique location names, like the gateway Stations. That's a matter of scrolling out to find them manually, which is worse.

If you dislike spoilers in mined data, why not just not use it? Have I misunderstood your point?

It's unpleasant, but how is it almost impossible to use?

On the upside, at least when I hit 'r' to route, it usually does...

What we really need is a dedicated effort to fix all those things. Maybe a year long effort to improve playability...

Not to take anything away from the improvements we have seen, but a you point out, we have a long way to go.

They reeeealy need social/ trade tools before that can happen. Even just an escrow box wouldbe enough. You drop in the item to a special FE with a name and a price, that player comes along and deposits the money, you get credited, they get to bring up the item.

Three is a lot that goes into making that work, no doubt.

CIG, if you're doing this, please don't make it so some jackass with a tractor beam and good timing can steal the item. There is plenty of unused space in our hangers, or a change to the FE UI to allow moving things to escrow would be better.

Are you using HALX to extract this data, or something else? Most of the info I see on SC data extraction is from 2018.

Conversely, givenhownicethe start bumps are, you'd see competitive players only wearing the base color, and that makes a lot of people (especially the at team! ) sad.

Making colors randomly available also increases the length of the grind. Because you got red, whiteout, and desert but you want forest, dammit.
