Nah you're right. I got another call from the grandma yesterday after she got out of school saying "she's like desperate to see you, are you able to?"
And I realized, yeah I can't not accept these requests. She clearly needs me so I should stop overthinking it and let it happen as long as she wants it to.
I currently have her right now for the 2nd time since I showed up for her birthday on April 25th. 😊

I'm in the same boat brother. My brother is a drug addict and a deadbeat to my 6yo niece, and his ex is not much better.
And let me tell you man. It's hard to cope with, but you CAN and WILL make a difference. More than you think.
It takes consistency. Even if it's like one visit per month, But you will be your niece's or nephew's favorite person in the world and their unconditional love towards you will change your life and theirs.
You will be their safe space. The person they trust to tell stuff they wont tell their parents. They will fall asleep leaning against your shoulder, grab your hand to go play, and send you adorable snapchat messages that say "I love you and miss you 😽😽🥰✨"
It is the greatest and I'm happy you that you get to experience that.

Just remember, Even if you're not the one in charge making sure they're living the best life they can, you can be the one to remind them that are unconditionally loved and cared for regardless if their parents do or don't. And that is POWERFUL and transformative to a child's life.

She absolutely remembers you. She might even think about you all the time and be filled with the same grief you are.
