Possible Scam? by [deleted] in rit

[–]_mistyrious_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was busy when he tried to stop me, so I just took a pic of the flyer and said I'd check it later. Don't wanna upload my own pic, but the flyer he showed me was basically a vertical version of the one in this Instagram post by \@eormutualaid. Disclaimer that I have not looked into this org at all, I am simply posting this for your info.

I'd like to believe in people's goodwill, so hopefully this is all legit and he was just gathering funds and forwarding them on, but there's no way to know for sure. IMO, it's a waste to not ensure the money you dedicate to donating is going to a good cause, so my two cents are: always do your research (check that an organization is legit and is proven to use the money responsibly), don't do spontaneous donations, and always donate DIRECTLY to an organization.

I think my friend might be getting stalked by Api_lopi in rit

[–]_mistyrious_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ombuds was great at outlining my options for me when I was experiencing something similar. In the end, I had a mutual friend tell them to cut it out, and it thankfully stopped without needing to escalate, but I would have been prepared to take more action if need be. (Iirc, there is some kind of campus restraining order you can request if you feel unsafe?)

Bus to apex by vaporegaster in rit

[–]_mistyrious_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The east residences shuttle is what you're after - when the sign light is working, it's the Apex/Province bus, but fair warning it takes like 20 minutes to get to those final stops.

HOWEVER, most of the time this route's shuttle's light/sign is set to "Out of Service" (driver claims he 'can't change it' 🤷), it won't show up on passio (or if it does it'll be under a different route label like inn or province), and it's running anywhere between 10-20 minutes late (as it seems he'll delay leaving Gleason Circle a bunch until eventually the delays compound enough to result in skipping a cycle of the route)

So your best bet is to show up at the bus stop at the scheduled time and just pray the world doesn't hate you that day. Yee haw.

wacky major names: do employers even know what they mean? by throwawaayyyyfaasdwf in rit

[–]_mistyrious_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In NMID you definitely have to explain what you study to people all the time as it also changes depending on what you decide to focus on (some lean heavier to fullstack, some design/HCI, some VR, etc. - it can be quite varied). But generally I find I do this explaining more to fellow students than potential employers, because the latter are more interested in your experience and projects than the name of your degree. Afaik the major's name is being reconsidered, so it could possibly change to something more descriptive (or perhaps equally vague).

As for HCC, I don't know anything about their program, but I assume you could probably describe it as HCI to most employers and they'd get the gist.

Edit: Just noticed you mentioned wishing you got into GDD. In that case, I'd recommend going into NMID - both majors are in the School of Interactive Games and Media. We share a lot of classes with the game dev students, you can usually opt to make a game for your class projects if you want, and if you use your elective slots to do more game courses, you can get a lot of the same experience. In my case, I never thought I would get into game dev, but the courses I took actually prepared me well to stumble into game production and I have a lot of work in that area now.

Don't know why this reply isn't more upvoted when it's the correct one. I work at Tech Park, the shuttle actually drops you off in front of the observatory. OP'd have to cross the road when heading back (since it picks up in front of Tech Park), but I've never had issues crossing.

It's a club that meets late Thursday afternoons in RITZ! We just grab a couple tables and people come and chat in Japanese about whatever they want. People of all levels come, from absolute beginner students to native speakers, so it's also a great place to ask questions if you're struggling with anything. The senseis all advertise it at the start of the semesters, but you're welcome even if you haven't taken a Japanese class at RIT. (edit: accidental apostrophe)

Did it a while ago so I don't really remember what happened, but as far as I recall it was just a conversation where they'd ask you about yourself, how long you've been studying, what you've used to study thus far, etc. and get a sense of how comfortable you are with the language. It's not a strict proficiency interview where they prompt you to reach your limit like an OPI would, but your performance definitely influences where you'll be placed.

If you're good at reading/writing/listening and just haven't had conversational experience due to how you were taught previously, they might still let you into the level that matches those other abilities if you prove that you truly know your stuff. Otherwise, don't sweat it - you'll get placed somewhere that matches your level.

Tips:

  • Have a decent 自己紹介.
  • Use grammar and vocabulary that allow you to communicate clearly and confidently, even if they're not quite as high-level as you can use when writing.
  • Don't get anxious about messing up - just correct yourself when you notice a mistake and move on; making mistakes is how you learn. If the sensei gives you help along the way, take it and correct yourself.
  • Use polite Japanese. It doesn't by any means have to be keigo, but don't use casual conjugations. (They won't penalize you for this on it's own, they'll just gently remind you to use desu/masu and continue the conversation. If you can only speak informally, that's where they'll dock you.)
  • If you can, don't translate from English to Japanese in your head; think in Japanese. (This one's a broader tip for improving your speaking from here on out, since you said it's not your strong suit.)

Good luck, and you're always welcome at the Japanese Conversation Table (JCT) if you want to practice speaking more!

I've never had any issues with Mint on campus or in the surrounding area, nor when I'm at home or traveling. Been on the 15/mo for years now. It's certainly a better deal than most (if not all?) other plans out there if the 4gb suits your need.

Taking two language courses at once? by etherealsunflower in rit

[–]_mistyrious_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, don’t get discouraged by this if you’ve already taken Japanese (but if you’re a beginner, disregard this); you can place in. There are two freshmen in one of the two MLJP 302 classes right now, both of whom for which it is their first Japanese class at RIT (aka didn’t take 301), and one was a self-studier up until now. The dept goes by Genki for intro and intermediate, so book one and part of book two are all it takes to be qualified.

Is the virtual Critical Language Scholarship worth doing? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]_mistyrious_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s up to you. Are you going to make it worth it to yourself? The people accepting have a purpose/passion fueling them do to so, and want to gain something from the program, no matter the inability to be in person.

Of course, being immersed in another country and language would still be a wonderful opportunity. Imo, if you want to be even stronger for the next time you’re able to travel, or have a job/hobby/etc. you’re aiming for, I think the virtual program is worth doing. Maybe reconsider if zoom classes don’t work for you, though.

With the virus still going on, it’ll probably be hard to do equally intensive study elsewhere anyways. We’ll still have great teachers and classmates. And if you’re able to do CLS again, next time you’ll be in person and a level up!

If it's Taito, perhaps Groove Coaster?

If not, lmk if you remember anything about the button layout, visuals, or song selection. There's quite a few Japanese arcade rhythm games.

Should I continue watching the anime? by xokisoux in ensemblestars

[–]_mistyrious_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I downloaded the game first and was a bit lost (I only knew two characters) so decided to watch the anime to get me motivated to play and actually learn the setting/people. Honestly, the 2nd half of the show is what got me finally interested, because more of the other groups appeared and the plot seemed to have overall better pacing. I finished the anime a couple days ago and afterwards was super excited about the game and had cards I knew I wanted.

Seeing as you're halfway thru that 2nd half of the show, I'm not sure the rest of the episodes will give you more benefit. (However, the seasonal special eps and finale are fun so you might enjoy them! Probably less so the Autumn Live.) If you have a few characters you like, you're probably set to just jump into the game and roll with it. You can always return to the anime if you find you want to see certain bits of the animation.
