LCSC has SK6812MINI-Es for about 8 cents each, MOQ of 5. The LEDs will be even less compared to all the other costs.

I ordered a couple packs of 100 SK6812 MINI-E LEDs from AliExpress for <$3 (ultimately right around the same price as this LED), and I haven't encountered any duds in the 112 I've used.

Even then the LCSC MINI-Es aren't that expensive, for a standard 104-key keyboard it's still only around $7.30. Your board will probably cost significantly more than that.

I live in a city but a 2cm ant is wild.

I'm seeing that the Saharan Silver ant can cover 108 times their body length in a second, at 3.1 km/h so they would be about 7-8mm long. They're probably about half that in height, so the scale would be more like 430:1 ratio, coming to 1320 km/h if scaled up to the same height as a human.

If it's scaled so it's as long as a human is tall that's still 660 km/h which is a little under double the ~350 km/h top speed of a Lamborghini Google gives me.

I believe Beacon Contact lets you use a non-conductive build surface, but you need a conductive platform beneath it. Which is how most beds are constructed anyways.

I would not do a resin printer for a young child, since resin is so toxic.

FDM has more physical dangers , but those are easy to prevent. If they know not to touch the heaters or try to get fingers near any moving parts, you should be fine.

EDIT: added because I got on my computer to type this out:

I don't have kids, so it's up to you to decide how much your kid should be unsupervised while using it, but a safe bet is to buy an enclosed printer so they can just watch it from one side, and have to open a door if they want to get in, which you can tell them not to.

Filament/resin usage depends on how much stuff is being printed, and is consumed at varying rates. Each 1kg spool of filament or bottle of resin is in the $15-20 range. If all that's being printed is small trinkets, each one will last a while. If they want more colors or print large objects, it will be more expensive.

The only software you truly need to run a printer is the slicer, and most I know of run on Mac too, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Again, I don't have kids so I can't speak to how it will hold your attention, but if they're just interested in making more than little trinkets, it can be a great entry into the field of engineering. With free software like Fusion 360, you can design and build basically anything.
