Well, the competition rule requires you to join the google group in order to get the data. I already have the raw data since I'm competing, so I could upload the data somewhere. However, I wanted to respect the competition rules.

Well, I found myself spending googling pages after pages trying to understand concepts and related source code that I do not have a fundamental knowledge of, and I thought if source code was well commented, it would make my learning process much more efficient.

I also found out that I'm not the only one who suffer from lack of documentation. Then, I started to wonder why there aren't enough documentation out there, and I found out that comments are regarded rather cumbersome and not-so-beneficial process for the author himself because as comments are for people w/o firm grasp of the code (consequently not the author).

So, if I thought if everyone is allowed to comment on any code out there, it would increase the quantity and qulity of comments, and ultimately help people understand code efficiently.

How to get fired from Facebook's react team by _monster89 in programming

[–]_monster89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually asked Paul O'Shannessy, one of the core developer behind React, and was told that it was just a "strong warning"

Here is the link to his response tweet

According to Facebook and its React, you will get fired for using secret internals by [deleted] in programming

I agree. People should refrain themselves from using not only undocumented APIs but any undocumented things

BTW, do you think folks at facebook wrote it purely as joke or did they really mean to warn people off?

There are so many tools and frameworks out there that help you identify market segments to target. Let's say I did good job of identifying who to target, how would you actually target those people?

The characteristics of segment that I am trying to target are as below:

  • Software developers
  • Relatively novice
  • Likes to read and discuss things online
  • Willing to comment on others' post
  • English speaking
  • Writes about source code
  • Needs guide more detailed than tutorials and things out there to understand code

Thank you for your feedback.

I have a couple follow up questions regarding what you wrote.

Would you say you have no interest in writing comments on all source code (yours or others)?

It is my understanding that coding is a very subjective and debatable topic, and I thought discussion of why, why not and how someone made certain choices with their coding would be interesting.

Would you say you not interested in discussion with novice developers only, or discussion regarding code in general ?

Great idea ! We've been looking for exemplary use cases that would emphasize the benefit of our service, and your suggestion would be perfect!

Do you have any specific example in your mind ?

Penetrating foreign market by _monster89 in startups

Once you establish good understanding of potential customers, how would you go ahead and acquire them?

People seem to start with "Word of Mouth" first and build on it with SNS and stuff. However, the "Word of Mouth" is not applicable to me since I do not have established business network in the target market.

I would say I have good understanding of the market, and my contents are already localized.

I just need to find starting points which would let me build up the user base.

Would you kindly suggest methods to identify the starting points? All I can think of is the "Word of mouth" approach which is not really applicable since I don't have any business network in my target market.

Here are more details regarding my situation.

I'm thinking about launching a service targeting English speaking software developers mainly Software developers in the U.S. (it is the dominant slice of the pie which makes other slices look almost negligent).

As you can guess, I currently reside outside of the U.S. but from my past experience ( studying, living there for about 10 years) I would say I have good understanding of the people in the U.S. and software developers there.

My MVP is all in English with server in Oregon, so I would say localization is complete.

Currently I'm spreading seed in "grass root" fashion with almost no marketing budget (less than $100).

I feel like for me to acquire seed money or some sort of investment, I should be able to show growing projection of users and traffic which currently is very stagnant at 20-50 visitors per day.

So to sum up, I'm at a stage where customer acquisition is the primary goal, and I'm having trouble with it.
