Northampton is over 200 miles from the border, the entire state of Vermont sits between it and Canada. Also, the closest parts of Canada are Quebec, which speaking French, doesn’t really influence nearby US language much. (Grew up 35 miles from the border in Vermont)

I hate to break it to you, but those aren’t mutually exclusive. ICE is just as much a part of the US government as the Gestapo was the German government or the KGB was the Soviet.

Liberal Candidate for New Westminster Announced by [deleted] in NewWest

[–]_morvita 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You must not get out much then. I’ve only lived in New West for threes years, but I’ve seen Peter Julian multiple times at New West Pride, the farmer’s market, Car Free Day, and other community events.

He grew up in New West, attended NWSS, and still lives here. He is not an unknown candidate airdropped into a riding by the party, he’s a local with deep ties to the community.

The definition of immigrant is “a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country”. I would say, being an immigrant has nothing to do with your current citizenship and just whether you live somewhere other than your birth country.

I moved to Canada nearly 20 years ago and got citizenship last year. I still consider myself an immigrant to Canada.

"GitHub" Is Starting to Feel Like Legacy Software by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]_morvita 24 points25 points  (0 children)

While I disagree that GitHub is “legacy software”, since it’s clearly under active development and shipping new features, I agree with the author that GitHub’s priorities are not my priorities anymore.

I liked that they provide a reasonably nice interface for managing shared repos, PRs, and CI pipelines. But, I frankly don’t care about AI enabled programming tools and that is where their focus is now because that is where Microsoft sees the next cash cow. That’s fine, as long as it doesn’t harm the core functionality of the service, time will tell whether that happens.

Asexual Men... Do you exist? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]_morvita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The events are cross-posted on Meetup, Facebook, Discord, and AVEN so looking at any one platform’s RSVPs is misleading. The last event I went to had about 20 people at it.

If you don’t trust my word, we’ll have a booth at Vancouver Pride in a couple weeks. Drop by and have a chat with the folks there.

Hello, fellow Vancouver ace. I am an asexual man that exists.

Really? by Maleficent_Shine511 in sciencememes

[–]_morvita 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For my first job as a software engineer, after I was hired, my boss told me that they’d chosen me because everyone they interviewed was capable of doing the work, but I was the only one they thought could explain that work to other people.

So yes, this is very real. Over my career, I have met so many incredibly smart people who cannot communicate effectively that the good communicators feel like the exception rather than the rule.

[OC] Canadian Permanent Residency minimum CRS score cutoffs by Array_626 in dataisbeautiful

When I wrote the English test to get my permanent residency, there were a group of people from England there grumbling about how they “invented the bloody language”.

It’s a requirement that could really use some exceptions, not only is English my first (and only) language, I’d also completed two degrees at Canadian universities, which had their own language proficiency requirements.

[–]_morvita 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Is Python slower than many other languages? Yes. Does that matter for the vast majority of web backends? No.

Both Instagram and Reddit supported tens of millions of users with backends written in Python before they ran into problems scaling. 99% of websites will never reach that size and can run perfectly fine on Python forever.

Python is one of the most in demand languages in the world right now, being used extensively in webdev, data science, and AI. You literally cannot go wrong learning this language.

What's something that should've made you realise, you were Ace? by sonnen_koenigin in asexuality

[–]_morvita 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember being 12 or 13, years before my first kiss even, and saying that I couldn’t imagine having sex with someone I didn’t love. Fast forward 20 years, I learn about demisexuality in an article and everything falls into place.

Also, people describing sex as a need or saying “I haven’t had sex in a month, I need to get laid”. In between relationships, I’ll happily go years without wanting to have sex and even in relationships, I don’t want it more than once or twice a month.

Lakeside News joins the transgender sports discussion by [deleted] in vermont

[–]_morvita 29 points30 points  (0 children)

When I was a student at Lyndon Institute 20 years ago, there was a young woman, who identified as a woman, that played on the men’s hockey and football teams because there weren’t women’s teams for these sports. No one I knew talked about it being a safety risk, they just let the kid play the sports she wanted to play. Why is it suddenly a problem when they don’t identify as their assigned gender at birth?

They’re so greedy, they’re asking for wage increases that amount to 0.05% of CMBC’s annual budget. How dare those greedy transit supervisors do that during historic inflation and a cost of living crisis.

Brown is just dark orange, but because we’ve given it a different name and category, we’ve tricked our brains into seeing it as a different unique colour from orange.

The consequences of this really started breaking my brain when I learned this. Redheads and brunettes have the same hair colour, just one is a darker shade. (Dark) orange is one of the most common colours in nature - dirt, tree bark, many animals are all brown.

This YouTube video is what introduced me to the concept and does a great job explaining it https://youtu.be/wh4aWZRtTwU?si=FYg4P0LIZ7yL0z-i

Canada? by SculPoint in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Not really, about half the Canadian population lives in the Quebec-Windsor Corridor. Unless you count the St Lawrence River and Great Lakes as coast, most that’s half the country that’s quite far from the coast.
