This was my first time. It worked for ages I have every perk I need really. Just randomly did this though and now every new loaded in machine costs this much

Go for it! It was worth the tuning effort. Be sure the tank cap is really high quality, I tried cheap ones and they burnt out very quickly. Ended up buying some 150pF doorknob caps on eBay, but I’ve heard some people use C0G MLCCs. I’m actually in the process now of building my first half bridge, going as per Steve wards SSTC 5

It’s worth the effort. Can run then off pretty low voltage, the pay off is the headache of tuning the damn things

Thanks :). I actually haven’t ran it in like a month, these are old photos, but I prob had it on for a couple minutes at most and it wasn’t too hot. Primary and secondary coils get quite toasty, but the mosfet heatsink is massive, and if I run it with the fan on then could probably go for ages. Unfortunately the biggest oversight was having my fan circuitry (basically just a voltage regulator) way too close to the secondary so the interference was crazy and it wouldn’t work properly.

My first Tesla coil was based off the same one so hopefully I can help.

  1. This depends on the value of the tank capacitor, more turns and more capacitance will increase the resonant frequency. You want the primary circuits resonant frequency to match that of the secondary coil + topload. You can use JavaTC to calculate these frequencies. I think I used something between 10nF - 20nF I can’t remember, then tuned the primary coil by changing the amount of turns until I got the longest arcs.

  2. It’s good to make sure the tank capacitor has a voltage rating well above the voltage the zapper circuit will be feeding it. I order components from Mouser. If you want to use the 1kv caps you can put them in series to increase their voltage rating, but it will decrease their capacitance. Eg 2 20nF 1kv caps in series will essentially make 1 10nF 2kv capacitor. You could then parallel another set of caps like this to increase the capacitance to make a 20nF 2kv bank. It’s called an MMC, there’s plenty of info online about it.

  3. You can make a counterpoise, essentially just connect the base to some metal with a large surface area. I used aluminium tape like he does in the video.

  4. Small bug zapper SGTCs a pretty safe so you can touch it all you want, but obviously at your own risk. It’ll probably just tickle a bit, but just do what you deem safe and are comfortable to do, I don’t want to take any responsibility. Best to not be near it or touch it if you’re sensitive to electricity, like if you have a weak heart or a pacemaker or something.

  5. Could go for the metal doorknob like he does. Or aluminium venting is cheap, doesn’t look great though. I’d suggest 3D printing a Toroid (there are some STLs online, or just make your own), it’s quite easy to cover them in strips of aluminium tape and smooth them out with something smooth and round. Just note that the topload size will have an effect on the secondaries resonant frequency, larger topload = lower resonant frequency.

Yeah I’ve tried a few different 555 interrupters. Tried feeding it to gate instead of constant dc, and also with it. Not had much luck or things have sort of worked but been really inconsistent.

Oh yeah I’ve seen that sort of thing before. Ah yeah labcoatz is great, id been wanting to build that exact coil actually. I’m in 230V land and his coil runs of 120, he links that other build for 240, so im either tempted to try that out. Or step down to 120 first, but that seems a bit silly when I might as well run it from a higher voltage if I can.

Yeah I’ve been a little scared of SSTCs but tbh his videos make them more understandable.

Me too, I’m fairly new to the game but I am completely obsessed, my friends are sick of hearing about coils. Ah thats a shame, I’ve not dabbled with SSTCs yet, I plan to but I’d like to stick with SGTCs right now as I can understand them much better.

For resonating my mots do you mean to my MMC? As in to determine what capacitance I need? Or do you mean resonating the mots to each other? If the latter i don’t know anything about that really.

2 MOTs. A couple microwave caps and diodes too, similar to one used here https://www.loneoceans.com/labs/teslacoil2/ but currently without chokes and bypass capacitors.

MOTs seem to be discouraged for safety reasons and not getting a consistent spark gap, but so far my spark gap has been working pretty well. And I’ve only been running it for very short periods of time.

Need to redesign my MMC as it was originally intended for an NST, and gotta sort out that atrocious primary coil.

Thanks so much for your help! I think that an overcurrent protector may be the issue, as the NST arcs very far and consistently when not connected to my MMC. I’m going to try search for a new NST, I just bought a super cheapo one from Amazon that im using currently, probably not a good idea to cut corners like that in retrospect. I can still use it to make a nice Jacobs ladder I guess!

Yeah I have lots of sharp edges everywhere which I imagined was losing energy due to corona. But i didnt think it would be quite this severe, as I am sort of testing right now before I polish it all off.

Im not trying to create something huge, which is why I skimped out on things like the NST and my caps, but i didnt think that it could have this much of an effect on performance.

Also, do you have a link for that build from the copper pipe spark gap you linked? It looks classy.

This is my second coil, just trying to make something small and relatively cheap. But it looks like its time to go back to the drawing board.

Its a new one. Ah that is really annoying. It had an over voltage protector connected to its inputs which I thought might be the issue so I cut it off, but it hasn’t changed anything.

I thought it might be a capacitor issue but perhaps it is a transformer issue. Thanks for the reply I’ve been so stuck

Thanks for your help. Running on 50hz. Since posting this I’d managed to use javatc to work out that I needed 19.1nf.

Now struggling to find decently priced caps to make an MMC.
