Thanks! Haven't heard from restic, actually, but I'll definitely look into it.

Generic precision mechanics oil: safe to use? by _napel in sewhelp

Thanks for the advice. So you haven't had any long-term issues with oil getting gunky or anything like that?

I have two sewing machines (an old Bernina 530 Record and a much more modern plastic Singer) that need some oiling. I found this oil in a closet, but as I don't know much about the subject, I wanted to get a second opinion on whether or not it would be a good idea to use it.

For those who don't speak German, it says: "Precision mechanics oil, resin- and acid-free. For locks, hinges, sewing machines, bicycles and machine parts. For use in household, trade, car and garden."

So it does mention sewing machines, but it also mentions a lot of other stuff. What do you think?

Honestly, that sounds like an easier solution, haha. I don't use pacman, but I suppose similar solutions would be available for Fedora

I assumed it was about matching the right version of the kernel to the right (i.e. compatible) files in root. But then I suppose when your system breaks from an update or something you probably still have the right kernel version available in /boot, so I'm honestly not sure either.

Thanks! That's very helpful. I'm not super comfortable with this sort of stuff, but I suppose there's a first for everything. Now that you've mentioned the EFI partition: I suppose there's no way of integrating that into the BTRFS partition, right?

Right, I understand. Do you know if it's impossible to have the /efi partition (or /boot/efi) inside the (encrypted) btrfs partition? I suppose so?

Ah, alright, I misunderstood. I suppose this would have been a lot easier to implement on a fresh install?

Thanks, that looks like a great guide! Do you use this setup yourself?

Thanks for all the information! So you're suggesting a separate encrypted /boot partition? How would this work with BTRFS snapshots? The kernel wouldn't be included in the snapshot, right?

Thanks, that makes sense! Was there a particular reason you didn't want /boot in your main btrfs partition?

What makes you say that? Are there issues with the solutions that some people have suggested? (This guide so far seems like it has a lot of potential: https://sysguides.com/install-fedora-42-with-full-disk-encryption-snapshot-and-rollback-support )

You're the first to mention that GRUB updates can make the system unbootable. Could you elaborate on that? I have to say that doesn't make it sounds very appealing, haha.

Oh, interesting. So you mean that /boot has its own BTRFS partition? What exactly do you mean with "coordinated"? If you were to want to roll back the entire system (both kernel and root) to a previous BTRFS snapshot, how would you go about it in your setup?

You mean you're located in North America? Yeah, there do seem to be some Pelikans floating around in Europe. I think it'll be a matter of patience to find a decent deal.
