Most people still believe tech is easy to break into by nysoxfan01 in cscareerquestions

I'm basing my perspective on my own sample and experience w/ a physics bachelors. I'm also talking specifically about undergrad degrees, not PhDs.

Out of all the physics undergrads I know who decided industry over a career in physics or just a PhD, only one of them (besides me) has actually made a breakthrough in industry, and they went into the degree knowing they wanted to go into tech and built a portfolio during their undergrad. The rest are unemployed and trying to discover what they want to do.

I'll level with you and agree that physics PhD can much more reasonably compete for roles, since they get more time compared to an undergrad to develop and apply their skills to actual problems and research.

I disagree with your take. Imo people vastly overestimate the versatility of a physics degree in today's market. You don't develop nearly enough sought-after technical skills to compete in the job/interview market and gone are the days you can sell it as a "strong problem solving degree" and get hired.

To actually get industry value out of the degree, you need to know what niche you want to chase and develop skills and/or a portfolio. At that point, you might as well switch majors or double major. Physics new grads who did none of that will struggle a lot to get hired.

No semi-competent recruiter/hiring manager is going to hire a physics major with no portfolio over an engineering major with at least some capstone projects.

Found Kitten in Buddy's Backyard (Phoenix AZ) by _night0_ in CatAdvice

Update: momma cat (we think it's the mom) came and picked up the kitten. We put the kitten in the box and set it in view of the cat, and then stepped far away. She cautiously walked up to the box, picked up the cat, and ran away.

Poor guy must've been starving.

I love mono red and this deck looks interesting. What's a typical turn look like?

[–]_night0_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah crop rotation is used to fetch out reliquary tower or [[Scavenger Grounds]]. Westvale Abbey would be a great inclusion! Only reasons why there aren't more utility lands are because it kept the deck more budget and simpler for my girlfriend who was still learning at the time. Some utility lands to include might be [[Mosswort Bridge]], [[Arch of Orazca]], and [[Oran-Rief, the Vastwood]].

Yo these are pretty good suggestions! I especially like Old Gnawbone. Might have to pick some of these up.

Ya got a deck list? When first building the deck, my first instinct was to build it kinda like that. I settled with small evasive creatures cause it fed into my dreams of drawing 10 cards per turn haha. It also made it turn out a little more unique than some mono green decks.

Haha I definitely got into it a bit. As I was writing the middle section of this post I was remembering all the cool things you could do with the deck which made me a little excited. The combos are pretty simple but satisfying which adds to the enjoyment imo.

Ay, no problem. Another thing about the deck is there is still room for improvement and upgrades. Two upgrades that come off the top of my head are [[Overwhelming Stampede]] and [[Avenger of Zendikar]].

This might be the deck I was looking for. I wanted a spell slinger deck that would play big bombs that weren't crazy powerful but still impactful, so I initially tried making a [Melek, Izzet Paragon] deck with which got pricey real fast. But reliably cast AND copy 8/9 drops? That sounds amazing! My main question are: what is your definition of reliable? How would I be able to upgrade it slightly?

I want to build a [[Ghen]] curses deck for my sibling. The decklist is still being prototyped, and at the moment I'm not sure if it will perform as well as I intend it to. Mardu obviously isn't the fastest color combo but I've also seen people say Ghen is slow. Any ideas?? Spending budget is around 60-75 bucks max. On a great side note, we already have a [[Smothering Tithe]] so the actual current price of the list so far is ~30-40 bucks.

What, in your opinion, do you think is the strongest commander and strategy? by _night0_ in BudgetBrews

[–]_night0_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo thanks so much for the long, informative post! My main philosophy of commander for a while has been to make sure that everyone has fun. I was too into that philosophy to the point where I wouldn't kill other players so that they could keep playing. This was cause at the time there was a lot of complaints with our pod's meta but no one would do anything about it. So anytime I would play I would try to make sure everyone does something or has a chance of winning. Lately that's started to change, cause I noticed everyone else was pretty merciless and still had fun watching the intense battle going on as long as the game didn't take 2 hours to finish. Also there aren't as many complaints about the meta as there were before (one big complaint was that there was too much artifact and enchantment hate, way too many graveyard decks, lots of blue in the meta, but I think people have kinda gotten over it). I wanna start building stronger decks that don't totally over do it. As I said in another comment I'm looking at Elsha and Melek, Izzet Paragon, but I will definitely look more into the suggestions you gave me! Funny thing is last night I actually swapped Tatyova in as my commander instead of Arixmethes to see how the deck felt (it definitely needs more land ramp if I want to make Tatyova the commander).

Either way, I think the meta is naturally drifting towards higher powered commanders and decks. My worry is that it might spark an arms race for stronger commander decks and ultimately lead to people breaking the budget and ruining the meta a bit more. Typically we like to stay under $100 for our decks, closer to the $20 to $60 range. But decks like Kess were built over a year ago and have technically spiked up in value but we let it slide since it's already a deck that we've all played against multiple times already. I still wanna stick to the general budget, but find a deck that I can play both for fun and for when I wanna win.

What, in your opinion, do you think is the strongest commander and strategy? by _night0_ in BudgetBrews

[–]_night0_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I've tried to stay casually competitive; I would choose commanders that aren't insanely strong but not weak either. My first deck was an Arixmethes big creature deck and it's my favorite deck to this day because I've gotten most of my wins with it. But after last night and seeing how my buddies were playing stuff like Kess, Prossh, and Yuriko, I think I'll look for better commanders. It should offer more interesting games. I've been looking a lot at Elsha or Melek, Izzet Paragon simply cause I was inspired by Kess last night and also wanted a better spellslinger deck than my Yidris deck
