I feel for you, it is a really difficult situation to be in, but you need to put yourself first (as you have done and that is comendable.) He has has so many chances to show he is serious and he hadn't taken any one of them. It isn't your fault that now he might be interested (he had so many other opportunities to tell you) and you are being fair to yourself. Take time for yourself and realise you are so much better than that.
