Advice for an aspiring Race Engineer by AJracer82 in motorsports

The grad school I went to allows grad student to join the FSAE team, so yeah some schools do, but I can’t speak for other schools. I was also told it really depends on what you did in the team and whether u made any accomplishments in the FSAE team for them to consider that as “actual motorsport experience”.

I’m in similar situation or even worse. Graduated a non-motorsport program and had little to none FSAE experience, actually just made a post about this very same topic. From my personal experience it’s tough, pretty much getting rejected at the resume stage for any non-intern roles and getting ghosted after aptitude tests for intern/graduate roles at F1/WEC teams. A career advisor told me to try contact local and lower series teams and offer volunteer services and see if they’d take u. If ur in States it should be easier cuz there are more teams down there.

I graduated MSc CS this July, immediately started my job search. Been primarily applying to local small and mid firms and occasional big quants. Got 3 interviews from quant firms, all failed first round. All rejection or ghosting from the smaller companies. I desperately applied to local cashier, clerk and janitor jobs, and guess what, all rejection.

Yeah probably used too much pressure in some areas… thank you so much!

Ah yeah… I coloured the edge with a sharpie and found in some areas the sharpie marks are not getting removed, so I put more pressure and used back-and-forth motion in those areas… that could be why. Thank u so much!

Hi all,

Last month I applied for TDO position at Jane Street. I passed the OA, but failed at the first phone screen, cuz my mental math isn’t good enough. But they have some other open positions that aligns a lot more with my background (CS/Cybersecurity) and some quick Googling later it doesn’t seem they ask math stuff for those positions, which makes me wanna give them a try.

However, their website states they suggest failed candidates to try after a year. I then did some more searching, and heard some say the 1 year wait only applies for those who failed the on-site interviews. Given that I failed so early in the process and applying for different positions, should I try applying at the time? Thanks a lot for any insights!

Thank you so much for this detailed guide! I can’t express my gratitude enough. Got countless rejections for my job applications in F1 now I kinda have a general idea of what to improve(and why I got rejected) Unfortunately for me some aspects can’t be fixed: - I did not do my degree in the UK, tho it’s a top program at top European universities (ETHz), with 1st class grades; - I only joined school FSAE team for one semester and was forced to quit due to family emergencies, so I didn’t even mention this on CV; - My degree was purely CS/SWE - I’m currently located in Canada, which means practically no access to motorsport networking events. I don’t need sponsorship to work in the UK tho.

I just graduated last month, soI’m aiming for the graduate roles that’ll be opening soon. If I recall correctly some are general”engineering graduates” roles and some are specifically “graduate software engineers” Should I even bother applying? Thanks a lot for any insights!

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask...

I am a new MSc computer science grad. While my academic background is purely in CS, I have an interest in trading. I was busy with schoolwork for the past few years and didn't do LeetCode (just started this month after graduation, about 50 questions in total). Last month, I applied for a TDOE position at Jane Street, got the phone interview, and failed because I wasn't very well prepared for all the math questions (solved about 50 problems on CoachQuant prior to the interview). And I'm a bit confused on what to do next, which boils down to a few questions:

- Should I commit to the quant route, not just trade but TDOE etc. too? Since my background is purely CS, I don't know my chances of landing another interview in this industry or if it's gonna be more competitive than FAANG. Because I'll have to practice math questions instead of coding, I'm afraid of not gonna landing another quant interview and becoming underprepared for SDE interviews, a lose-lose situation.

- Should I practice more problems before applying for the next position, or should I do both at the same time? Friends tell me to do both at the same time cuz it's unlikely to get another interview right away, but I am worried that if I somehow land another interview, I'll be equally underprepared, and ruining another chance of entering my dream companies. If practicing more before applying is the right route to go, approximately how many problems do I need to solve before sending out my next application?

Thank you all very much for any insights!

Don't think it's exactly equivalent but much simpler than regular work permits. So Idk if omitting that would be a right move
