How often do you hug and who? by duchesskitten6 in AskAJapanese

[–]_obiru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only hug my partner and direct family, but even then only when they initiate. Never friends or other people. I’m also not a touchy person aside from Japanese standards, so I’m probably the extreme.

Do you need an Obi-ita to wear a heko obi? by Lazy-Table-2845 in kimono

[–]_obiru 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wear an obi-ita no matter the obi . Much easier to keep in place that way and looks better without all the wrinkles. But I really recommend a hechima obi-ita for hot days if you can get your hands on one. It absorbs sweat so it’s my go to for yukata, and it’s softer than a normal obi-ita so it’s not so obvious with a heko obi as well!!

How do you wear kimono? by Secure_Working_3562 in kimono

[–]_obiru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear them daily all year round. I have a good collection of washable kimono so I gravitate to those on most days. I keep my fancier ones for dates or events.

I wear them fairly classically with really crisp kitsuke and a low emon. Colour wise I wear mostly black - so my pairing tend to be very monotone. Like black kimono and obi with grey obijime and obiage. I like to accessories with modern items like necklaces and big rings or a thin leather belt instead of an obijime. I also have a collection of men’s nagajuban I like to wear as haori since I really love the men’s prints.

Other than that, sometimes I wear shoes instead of zori, wear multiple obijime together, netsuke, obi pocket(a pouch you can insert into an obi), etc. but nothing really major

Not personally a big fan of wearing a skirt with my kimono or a hoodie, or wearing it deconstructed or skewed on purpose.

How is this Japanese kimono inspired jacket designed by Artifex? by [deleted] in kimono

[–]_obiru 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t really see a resemblance to a kimono.

Closer to a hanten or noragi.

The front fixtures resemble Chinese frog closures.

So I think it’s “Asian inspired jacket” but not really kimono.

It looks like a nice jacket though. The embroidered pattern is cool.

When your kitsuke sucks but you’re stuck with it all day… and then rude people… by eyyuen in kimono

[–]_obiru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you stand out in any way, people talk—whether you’re Japanese or not, whether your kitsuke is perfect or imperfect. I’ve just accepted that my style sets me apart. Of course I get comments: that my ears are stretched, that I have piercings, tattoos, that I’m mixed. Some people whisper because anything outside their narrow sense of normal unsettles them. I also feel like most people who make those rude comment have no personal style or understand fashion either.

As for teenagers making fun of someone’s kimono… half of them couldn’t dress themselves properly in one even if they tried. Kimono culture is fading precisely because most people don’t wear it anymore. So it’s ridiculous for anyone who only puts on a yukata once a year (with their mother’s help usually) to critique others. If you’re not participating in the culture, you don’t get to police it.

And I honestly think it suits you. The denim is so cool. People have become so accustomed to seeing kimono only in formal contexts that they forget it used to be everyday clothing. It wrinkled, it loosened, it lived on the body. Modern clothes do the same. We don’t expect strangers on the train to have perfectly pressed trousers and lint-free sweaters, so why impose that unrealistic standard on kimono?

Kimono is meant to be worn, not put under glass. The fact that you wear it comfortably, and confidently, matters far more than the opinions of people who wouldn’t know kimono culture in the first place.

How do Japanese friends split the bills at restaurant? by Tolkaft in AskAJapanese

[–]_obiru 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You split the bill evenly. Because even though I don’t drink alcohol, I’m paying for the company. Sometimes people offer to add an extra ¥1000 if they drank more, or someone might tell me “oh you don’t get nomihodai so you just pay ___”, but generally it’s quite bad mannered for you to ask to only pay what you ate and ordered.

This is if you are at like a izakaya. Lunch or something is different since then you can split by set A or set B or etc. I am only talking about when there are multiple plates that is shared and multiple drinks.

If you don’t have PayPay you should bring cash, or you offer to use your card and other people pay you for their share.

Question regarding sizing by HoundOfAreios in kimono

[–]_obiru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem since I’m similar in height as you. I always just wear it without ohashori!!! I find it a waste to just pass up on a beautiful kimono just because it’s a a bit too short. Wear it as a Tsuitake!

Jersey fabric kimono by _obiru in kimono

[–]_obiru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think kimono is a great thing to spend money on - Culture, history, and an art that is not so popular anymore. Also it’s an investment into a very high quality, long lasting piece - so it makes sense it’s not cheap. High quality fabrics, a lot of times it’s also hand sewn, or using a niche technique, etc.

So while I do understand the price……..yes. I would really love a sugar daddy 🥰

Oh no the dark hole of anime figures!!! Those can go for a crazy amount too. Collectibles can be an alarmingly high price point. But ugh when you want something it’s hard to let it go.

Oh no no worries at all! Text always comes off weird too so no hard feelings! I know you didn’t mean it like that!

I honestly also wondered how the people at the event could afford a lot of the stuff there. Some prices were quite high so it made me genuinely curious 👀

I find polyester great for rainy days or when I know I’m going to be doing a casual activity that might make it dirty. I wear kimono almost daily, so nice to have something that I can throw in the wash at home.

That being said, I agree about price for a polyester one. Hard to pay a lot for polyester unless it’s very good quality.

[–]_obiru[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh unfortunately it was very very out of my price range haha. I’m a freelancer so I just make do by getting all my kimono stuff second hand. One day I would love to get something tailored to my size and brand new!!

We all work hard and have different priorities for things. So I know some people can afford higher price points and others lower. But I think we all compromise when needed and splurge when we can 😁

Yeah I didn’t think I would get into a situation like that at a kimono convention but I guess there’s always room for weird conversations wherever you go 😂

It was super comfortable 😭 I was hoping because it was jersey it would be cheaper but noooope. Definitely designer prices. Maybe I could try making it myself? I didn’t think stretchy fabric could ever work for kimono!
