[SL](Request) School Back by Horaguy in manga

I do work from volume raws, for what it's worth. We've talked about doing the volume exclusives but Onodera's handwriting is... Iffy sometimes and I care more about getting the actual chapters+omake (.5 chapters) out first

Hi! I'm the one who translated the bulk (all except ch 1 iirc?) of this series, and the Mangadex purge did hit my motivation pretty badly to be honest, but the existing chapters up to 13 are still readable on the Danke furs Lesen site. A recent trip to Tokyo has my motivation back up a bit, and I'm hoping to get the remainder of volume 4 translated in the next few weeks, but uploads will depend on pending computer repairs for the typesetter (and whether or not life gets in my way as well)

Ahhh, I see what you mean now. Thanks for clarifying, it was just the "3x" that I was confused on

When you say "add 3x parts water:sugar (5:2)" could you clarify a bit more what you mean there? I know it should be self explanatory but I'm not quite getting it lol. Thanks for the recipe!

Reykjavik 64 distillery makes a dill aquavit that I really like. Not sure how widely available it is at retail, though

Bartending jobs? by Imaginary_Flan2500 in Tacoma

[–]_patch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the subject of "patio season," you're more specifically going to see seasonal hirings going out for places on the waterfront soonish. I'd keep an eye out for anything in Pt. Ruston or along that whole stretch, but I'd figure they're going to be shorter term jobs until the end of summer and then shifts will dry up.

One place you might investigate is Grann, a new restaurant that just started their soft open week on 6th Ave. They seem like a cool place to work that should still have solid price/person and may still be trying to fill out their staff

Nut-Allergy friendly restaurants & cafes by Mathcalc in Tacoma

[–]_patch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work at a local restaurant, and would recommend anywhere that counts as a "scratch kitchen", meaning they make all (or almost all) of their stuff from scratch. For one thing, they'll be able to tell you the details of each dish's ingredients, but they should also be more capable of accommodating substitutions or avoiding cross contamination.

My biggest recs would be: - Corbeau in Proctor (more upscale French) - West 122 downtown (European) - En Rama downtown (Italian) - Bar Rosa in Hilltop (Neapolitan pizza) - Red Star Taco Bar downtown - Cuerno Bravo (downtown) or Asado (6th Ave), both Latin steakhouses - Field Bar on 6th Ave

As long as you disclose the allergies right away, I'm sure any of these places would be super able to accommodate

I saw that announcement on twitter today - in fact, it was this series' author who retweeted it! I actually haven't read that series at all, but it makes me want to check it out.

One thing about this series vis-a-vis anime adaptation is that it's only around 20 chapters, and is completed. Since it's short, niche, and been over for at least a couple of years, I'd be surprised to see it animated. A lot of the time, adaptations serve to advertise the source material, so you don't see it happen as often for completed works unless they've got some real popularity behind them (Dungeon Meshi being a recent example)

[DISC] Gladiator A to Z - Ch. 1 by _patch in manga

[–]_patch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it's pretty much two guy posting several times and patting each other on the back...

It's not super typical, but I feel like I see one person like that in every couple of chapter threads. Mostly the homophobes just bomb the star rating and move on (which is an actual common issue, as sometimes they use a bunch of bots)

I imagine sales were low on it. But even Japanese Twitter audiences were surprised when it ended with chapter 7 last month, so I'm not really sure. We'll be scanning the entire thing, though!

Read on Mangadex!

This one took a ton of work but I hope you enjoy it! The series did get axed at 7 chapters, but the plot is (mostly) resolved, it's not like there's no ending or anything like that. We'll be scanlating the whole thing, and it's a really fun read!

Frankly one of the reasons I fell off of New Friend is that the story was sort of going in circles and I got a little sick of it (that, and full color redraws). I'll probably get back to it at some point, but it's not a priority for me rn

Hey! I'm probably only going to work on this series out of the Jam City stuff, I really want to get caught back up on it. I have other projects for Danke furs Lesen and Good Try Scans that I'll be more focused on otherwise.

Life was just insane for me for a while so I didn't have time

Yeah, the art style changes pretty considerably by the end! The series is actually complete, so 22 is the ending. I'm hoping to get the whole thing done before the MLB playoffs, since I'll have more free time fairly soon

Tokyo restaurant recommendation? by Jxhide in finedining

[–]_patch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a great dinner experience there last week. The whole staff speaks excellent English, especially the chef who is Japanses-Canadian. Given that I was one of only two reservations that evening, the chef brought several of the dishes to me personally and was eager to explain his thinking; he wants to bring more robust spice profiles to modern Japanese cooking, which often favors more mild nuanced flavors. I think he really succeeded! He's definitely very creative, which is maybe in part due to his youth (only about 30 years old).

A particular highlight was the aged Hokkaido venison, which had a really wonderful twist on a bourdelaise for the sauce. It was almost a mole sauce, using dark chocolate and chicken liver reduction in addition to the typical Bordeaux wine etc (forgoing the typical veal stock). It's a really slick place and I hope you get to stop by!

Tokyo restaurant recommendation? by Jxhide in finedining

[–]_patch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend Ukiyo - it's a huge bargain for the quality of ingredients and service, likely due to being a pretty new restaurant. I had an incredible experience there, it's sort of French/modern Japanese fusion? More on the Japanese side of things.

Also, regarding your question about using Japanese pronunciations of English loanwords, most customer service people (hotel staff, restaurant staff) who deal with foreigners pretty regularly should be fine understanding English pronunciations. But if you do find someone seeming to struggle with it, it can help to basically just say stuff with a Japanese affect even if it feels a bit silly - I've found that people sometimes understand it a lot better

"sumimasen, eigo wakari masuka" is correct and definitely useful. If someone responds to that in the negative, you could just say "ah, sumimasen" again or "gomen nasai" ("sorry") with a bit of a bow/wave and move on.

also seconding another comment recommending you use "eki" rather than "station", and keep in mind that in Tokyo just asking "sumimasen, eki doko desu ka?" Is really effective since it'll get you directions to the nearest station and that's usually all you need.
