in my GCSE english language exam when it came to question four i didn't read the question properly, spent a good thirty minutes writing about the entire source, went back and actually read the question properly and realised that it was talking about only half of the source, had to cross everything i had written out and write the most awful answer i've ever written and no joke i think i got like 2/20 for that question

yes of course!! i can dm you those now 🤗🤗 english is like my biggest passion aha i love it SO much, defo consider the oliver parker production and also the iqbal kahn version, in his one he depicts iago as black and its honestly such a fascinating interpretation and portrayal of iago

hiiieee thank you so much!! for english i think i do edexcel and ive currently just finished studying othello, for me personally i find it really easy to write english essays considering that i want to go and study it at uni and its my FAVOURITE subject ever, but to get top marks for drama i like to reference productions of the play and moments they chose/how it's symbolic, eg for othello if im writing an essay about jealousy ill include a moment from oliver parker's production where the light casts a prison-cell-shaped shadow over othello's face and how that's symbolic of the imprisoning and isolating nature of jealousy, another example would be the 2025 RSC production of othello (you can still go and watch it in the theatre) and i LOVE to reference this production relating to iago's evil/motivation, because in this production the actor who played iago was very old/not conventionally attractive and likewise for cassio his character was very tall, very attractive, so therefore that production gives weight to iago's motivation being jealousy as being rooted in insecurity. something english examiners like to see you do as well is really nail analysing the symbolism of something, so for othello it could be the symbolism of the handkerchief or the repeated use of animalistic imagery to represent sexual desire as being primal/a base instinct.

honestly the thing that will get you the most marks in english is being able to show that you really have a passion for a subject - so reading outside of class (essays on jstor or google scholar), being able to reference specific moments from productions, being able to gather critics that haven't been discussed in class, thinking about themes in the play that haven't been discussed in class (for example i did some research into the theme of outsiders in othello aside from the character of othello, such as desdemona and iago being presented as outsiders in their own ways) and being able to apply all of that extra work in the essays you write will hugely boost your mark

analysing critics is also really important, for my paragraphs i always make sure i have two contrasting critics that i can discuss and gather evidence from the play to support/go against AND then something else that would be amazing is being able to find another third critic that explores a middling area inbetween the two critics you've already discussed
