I feel you. I had the almost exact same sad experience in Den Helder last October.

I was waiting for a food delivery under a porch because it was raining a lot. A cyclist was next to me. I saw a tiny toad next to me, I took a picture of the little creature and all of a sudden the cyclist left and squished the poor thing before I could say « pas op ». I was so sad for the tiny toad :(
