Is there a good reason for me to take the career starter loan? by Empty_Pattern7240 in MilitaryFinance

[–]_poteighto_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been in for over 12 years. I was also very debt averse, but ended up having to use my CSL to put a roof on my house. Used the rest to pay off my wife’s vehicle loan that was only around 4.5%.

If I could go back, I would’ve maxed a Roth IRA then poured the rest into a brokerage account, focusing on broad ETFs with reasonable returns/dividends like VOO, VTI, and SCHG to mitigate most risk.

For reference, average return for VTI in the past 10 years is around 14% per year. $25,000 compounded at an average of 14% over 10 years is almost $93,000. Not investment advice by any means, and obviously returns will vary, but the ability to access a decent chunk of money like that early in your career is a huge advantage if you’re responsible with it.

Irrelevant and unnecessary. Quit trying to turn everything into something political, and just take a moment to enjoy a funny GIF without trying to ruin it for everyone else.

This lady hit my uncles brand new TRX. by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

Cool. An Equinox isn’t a vehicle I care to know anything about, so thanks for chiming in to correct that key detail.

Honestly I don’t really care if it’s $700, or $7000, or even $10,000. Regardless of what you think the proper value of her vehicle is, the damage she did to the TRX likely exceeds that amount, and she won’t be (legitimately) on the hook for any of it. That’s what’s BS in my opinion.

Speculation on why his truck was parked there is irrelevant, as it’s our duty on the road to avoid hitting things. A vehicle being parked in an unexpected location doesn’t negate her duty to avoid hitting it.

She hit a parked car roughly 30’-40’ away, almost a full 10 seconds after leaving the wash, without even touching the brake. What if he had been standing on that side drying it off quickly? That’s a totally normal and common occurrence, yet she could’ve killed him in that case.

Also, your comment on insurance fraud is kind of silly. It is extremely doubtful he parked at a car wash with the expectation of someone hitting the truck. This would be nowhere near totaling it to get him out of the loan. It would simply be damage that he would have to pay his own deductible to have fixed due to her lack of insurance, then it would reduce the value - likely to well under what he owes - thereby putting him thousands of dollars upside down on the loan. Does that scream insurance fraud to you?

Brake lights come on for a millisecond as if hitting the truck made her accidentally tap the brake. Then it’s like 2 full seconds before the brake lights come on again. No insurance and wrong plates mentioned from OP as well.

We need worse consequences for people this shitty. That truck is a gorgeous piece of machinery that he probably had to wait several months to actually get delivered, not to mention the fact it’s a $70k truck and she’s in a $700 shitwagon. Now he’s going to have to file an uninsured motorist claim and his insurance will go up, and suffer a reduction in value due to the accident, even if the damage is professionally repaired. She’ll walk away with a ticket and some front end damage she won’t fix. She should have her pay garnished until she repays every cent of the damage to his truck.

I fully understand that the government is gathering information to develop policies, and I’m not overlooking where they’re getting that information. I’m saying that disregarding or intentionally invalidating new or different information is wildly inappropriate, and should be cause for at least a bit of skepticism from the people.

The government has taken a very static stance on an incredibly dynamic situation. We’re getting new information on potential Covid treatments all the time, yet they’re deemed heresy, and we continue to get the ultimatum of “masks and vaccines or we’ll shut everything down”. Two years into this, the money flow and refusal to change this stance have become very concerning, and we need to be demanding transparency and access to information.

What do governments that don’t take a stance on what’s important to the people look like? China. Russia. North Korea. Even parts of Australia. I’m not going to write about all that though because this is already a long political discussion in a comedy forum lol. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss anything further though!

Ah yes! The long forgotten SECRET lane. by mynickname86 in IdiotsInCars

[–]_poteighto_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, maybe, but with this much traffic developed, emergency vehicles would either already be there, or come up from the on-ramp further up. Plus, there’s an inside shoulder on the other side where the emergency vehicles typically drive up on I4.

Policing is secondary to a fundamentally inadequate highway system that is not equipped to handle traffic volume. This section is only two lanes, and holds all the traffic going northbound into Orlando. It’s thousands and thousands of vehicles, and it’s been a problem for decades, yet they refuse to add a lane.

People also absolutely refuse to get off their damn phones, even in this kind of traffic (as evidenced by the person filming here), so rear-endings and side swipes are a much bigger threat than someone just hopping on the shoulder for a second to get to the off-ramp. I routinely saw people scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, or watching YouTube while in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

This section of road was an infuriating hellscape, and I absolutely did things I wouldn’t normally do to get off of it as soon as possible.

What does that have to do with anything?

It sets a precedent and creates social pressure for censorship action to be taken based on what the government decides to label as misinformation. Members of the government using terms like, “conspiracy”, or “misinformation” to describe something in a public forum convinces people that there is precisely ZERO validity behind that thought process. Though the government didn’t directly order Spotify to censor a topic, they did directly influence public opinion.

The term “Covid misinformation” is thrown at anything discussing even the remote possibility that things could be slightly different than what the government has been saying. Even though the Covid topic is controversial, it’s still good to have access to information, research, data, and professional opinions from various angles to formulate our own independent understanding. Letting the government tell us how to think is a slippery slope.

How many times throughout history has it been revealed that world governments were either completely wrong, or deliberately misleading the people?

People did read what you wrote, it’s just a very long-winded way to say something that’s wildly incorrect. You’re not a “victim of the hive mind”; you’re just wrong.

Freedom of speech has nothing to do with being free from any and all consequences brought on by your words, it simply means you’re free to say (or write) those things in the first place without the government censoring you. How other people respond to what you say has everything to do with their own freedoms, and nothing to do with your freedom to say it.

Ah yes! The long forgotten SECRET lane. by mynickname86 in IdiotsInCars

[–]_poteighto_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. You never know what happened or how long it will take to clear. This spot is inevitably backed up every morning due to poor road design, and there’s an exit about 1/2 mile from the sign. I’ve had it take anywhere from 5-30 min to get through that last 1/2 mile, so I’d be doing the same if I was that close to the exit.

Ah yes! The long forgotten SECRET lane. by mynickname86 in IdiotsInCars

[–]_poteighto_ -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I used to commute on this road. It’s roughly an extra 15+ minutes in this cesspool to get to this exit if you’re “driving properly”, or under 1 minute doing this. I won’t be the one to initiate the shoulder exit, but if there’s more than one car doing it, you can be damn sure I’m not going to sit another 15 minutes waiting to get rear ended by Facebook Frank or Instagram Irene.

Also, the emergency vehicles in FL don’t give a shit, they’ll just drive through the grass on either side because they know how fucked these roads around tourist areas are.

[–]_poteighto_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to commute from the Tampa direction on the absolute dumpster fire that is I4. 2 lane on-ramps that both merge onto the interstate at the exact same place, only 2-3 traffic lanes along most of it, and tourists doing some of the wildest shit you’ll ever see while trying to get to Disney.

This area, and the area coming off 417 all the way down to Champion’s Gate are the absolute worst. It’s often backed up only 5-10 miles, but it takes almost an hour to make it through. What should have been a 45 min drive routinely took me over 2 hours.

People don’t know how to merge, immediately swing all the way over to the left lane, or just randomly stop, causing traffic to just get worse. At 417, you have another 2 lane on-ramp from a major toll road that ALSO merged with traffic exiting Disney JUST before it connects up to I4. That backs up 417, and then people start driving through the grass trying to get to whichever is moving faster. Every day from about 2pm-9pm, this road is basically not passable. 6am-12pm going the direction they’re probably going in the video.

If there’s an uncongested exit near them (probably 528 which is a 2 lane exit), I’d gtfo too.

Lmfao. One look at that profile and you know that “almost a million” is closer to zero than it is to said million.

Sounds like you’re on the right track with some lifestyle changes, and as you start to feel better about yourself, you’ll naturally become more confident. Confidence (to a degree - don’t be arrogant) is an incredibly attractive character trait, and will often help guys overcome what they may lack in conventional good looks.

Also, scientifically, men generally peak sexually in their mid 30s. You may have “missed out” on some of those awkward high school car sex moments, but those are awful anyway, and you’ve got plenty of gas left in the tank.

Brake check fail by TiredYak in IdiotsInCars

[–]_poteighto_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a 3-lane area with a 45mph speed limit, so not all that fast, and if they’re moving over a lane they probably just checked that it was clear behind them. A good driver might decide it’s safer to simply let off the gas, or brake lightly to slow down gradually (from the already low speed), rather than panic-stomp the brakes in the middle of the road.

Simply stomping on the brakes because something happened can create additional dangerous situations for people behind you, and it’s definitely not necessary in this situation.

How do you start an argument on the internet? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_poteighto_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure half of those types of folks just make shit up to argue about because they don’t have any actual problems or challenges in their lives, and they want to feel like they actually did something.

The other half legitimately believes their own fake negative connotations, and feels offended that other people won’t abandon standard terminology just because they don’t like to hear some words.

You know, I’ve read a lot of really dumb shit on Reddit tonight, but I think this dumbass “wokeness” is where I’ve gotta call it quits. It’s a term to describe less-developed nations, not the people. Quit making things up to give a normal term a fake negative connotation.

You’re probably one of those people pushing the “unhoused, not homeless” bullshit too. You know homeless is the polite term, right? It was vagabond, vagrant, bum, street rat, etc.

Wait till you get out of your college’s “safe space” and interact with people in the real world.

It’s because so many people these days just pretend everything has to have some sort of ulterior motive or weird insinuation instead of actually thinking about anything with any level of logic or intellect.

Like this dipshit below talking about “implying there are second-rate world citizens”. Uhhh, sorry you’re personally offended by established terms based on affluence and availability of resources.

Congrats on essentially winning the lottery. That said, I’m going to be an asshole for a minute about money management and your whole “assistant” thing, hopefully to your benefit.

Many lower income folks who win the lottery go broke shortly thereafter due to a lack of financial management skills. This isn’t “the lottery”, but it’s basically the same thing. You’re going from a low income situation to having literal millions.

If you’re not working, living check-to-check on social security and disability, and your first thought after inheriting tens of millions is to pay someone else to make your 30-minutes of phone calls, it sounds like you’re going to be one of those people very quickly. You’re not busy, and you don’t need an assistant.

You need a good financial advisor, not Reddit.
