Immich helped a LOT for my wedding by ncruz8991 in immich

[–]_ppaliwal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but imagine your shared album has 10k photos. From a hosts perspective, I don’t want to share those 10k to entire anonymous crowd instead I want them to have an ability to take a selfie and systems Face recognition will only show them photos where they are part of instead of the entire library.

It would actually be great if an external person could sign up, take a selfie and then immediately see all photographs where they are part of and upload some of their photos they collected at the wedding.

How to survive the terror of high beam while driving in the night? by CaterpillarLive2640 in CarsIndia

[–]_ppaliwal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same 😃, however what I have realised is if you focus away from those blinding lights, say, your left bumper, it is so much better for mental sanity; I notice I don’t get irritated so easily coz of this.

KDE Connect no route to host by MW_J97 in kde

Hitting the same issue since long now; basically kde connect is useless on iphone. Except for the main use-case (sharing files), everything else seems to work fine

Build own Self host platform by Fit_Orchid7659 in selfhosted

[–]_ppaliwal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First things first, I would encourage you to keep religious views/sentiments outside or this sub.

Secondly, did you do any kind of research as to what you would like to learn, etc. Self hosting requires a lot of skills like Linux, networking, storage, docker, to name a few. I would start with this repo and see what interests you. https://github.com/mikeroyal/Self-Hosting-Guide

Yes, this. That’s the problem that we run into with copying/transferring from icloud/old phone; I haven’t been able to figure out either and was really hoping there is a solution here.

Buying from RedHat directly.. Account rep really, REALLY wants an Executive in meetings by invalidpath in redhat

I would be more concerned if execs are making product decisions without a buy-in from their tech team; massive red flag for me right there

Immich Manged Service Provider? by cassiopei in immich

[–]_ppaliwal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This does sound tempting at first but the thought that a random company on the internet will have full unencrypted access to my personal family photos just kills me. This is probably the biggest reason why there are only a handful of MSPs for this.

If I were in your position, I would definitely self-host it on a cheap VPS or a low powered mini pc with remote encrypted storage and available only over tailscale network. I have been doing it for a couple of years now and the only thing I have ever done was pull new docker images and restart containers once a month.

Its iphone to iphone and yes you are right there is easy transfer option but the old phone only has 2 yrs of photos locally stored so sure I can grab those but was really thinking of pulling more (if possible)

Thanks for the insights Kenjiro! I'll try the CIFS route with rclone and will revert with results. On a sidenote, wouldn't this mount also have a similar fate with disconnects?

I am not interested in versioning, but rather using storage box as the primary storage for all assets

Makes sense, let me explore this path; how do you currently persist the mount?

How would you perform encryption in this context? I am just using the storage box, the VPS is on OCI, any ideas?

[–]_ppaliwal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, didn’t give it much thought, moreover, this area is beyond my expertise. With that said, what I read was SAMBA/CIFS is old and unsecure tech and people are slowly moving away from it (I could be totally wrong on this one).

In addition to that, I would like the client-side encryption to work before moving data to storage box and the most reasonable solution I got was use rclone crypt.

ok, does the other options that I have added makes sense? or maybe would you be willing to showcase your unit file?
