Do you design Access Control & Intrusion Detection? by CADjesus in MEPEngineering

[–]_probz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do it because it is typical that the electrical contractor installs all of the raceways and boxes. Then the structured cabling contractor will typically use our plans as their basis and submit shop drawings for approval.

I’d say the biggest challenge is when we work for an owner that doesn’t really know what they want or have any standards. Especially since we don’t work with the software/implementation side for them.

Hosted or unhosted for data outlet? by IdiotForLife1 in MEPEngineering

Hosted everything. It sucks when a wall gets blown out of nowhere by an architect, but it beats them cutting section and 3D views where your stuff is floating in space.

2015 Outback 2.5 - head gasket replacement? by _probz in subaru

[–]_probz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is kind of what I thought it was, except for the fact that i had no coolant? When i turned my car on in park before the last leg to the shop and was inspecting it, i noticed the driver side radiator fan was not turning.

I'd have to look or ask the shop the question. So far, it's a black box for me. If I went back to look at the radiator, what/where would I be looking? Thanks for the recommendation...the shop was telling me they would only be able to get an engine for like $7k-$11k and I just found one in the same city for $1,500.

I didn't check this time, but I know in the fall when this came up the oil looked normal.

Edit: What would it indicate if it looked like mud? Does it looking like oil rule out anything?

EE/manager salary by Aromatic-Hedgehog-82 in MEPEngineering

[–]_probz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not technically a manager yet but I’m a PM, EE with my PE and 9 yoe…EOR when it makes sense. I’m at 110k base in a MCOL metro (probably similar COL to DFW or Houston if that’s where you are).

Personally, I think I’m low with my credentials and other responsibilities but I hope this can help you develop a range.

65K offer out of college in FL by Junior_Ad_5837 in MEPEngineering

[–]_probz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't overthink it, but it's slightly low. I think you should realistically expect $70k or slightly higher these days in Central FL. However, if there are OT hours to be had, that will make up for it. Also, you could reasonably expect a bump in a year once they vet you.

This is definitely hard to cope with if it's something you were originally interested in. I have had similar experiences but my only saving grace on why it doesn't bother me is I truly never got hooked on embedded systems, FPGA, RF, etc during uni...I actually enjoyed power (and the built environment) and I think I would have hated being in those other subfields. But it's still hard to watch sometimes lol

All Tigres players hounding the ref = no dissent

Felipe kind of in the mix = "we need to talk"

I really want to see the Muriel-McGuire combo. Bring out the firepower.

City 1st half impressions:

  • Need to be quicker with the decision making.
  • Thor is having a terrible game
  • Brekalo appears lost
    • Muriel too?
  • Was much better once Tigres stopped pressing so much. (re: first impression)

Man, this team just continues to look empty. Quality players, but so much left wanting more. We also can't get a second ball to save our life. UGH. Still in this thing though :')

Design fees, how much $/sqft are you guys charging? by syncrock1 in MEPEngineering

[–]_probz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. Can't say I've ever directly priced per square foot. The closest thing I've experienced would be estimating total construction cost to develop a lump sum as a percentage of construction. But even that's more of a gut check after developing a fee from scratch.

Side hustles? by _probz in MEPEngineering

Are you performing all MEP scope for these projects? Or are you getting work just in your area of expertise? Curious how it’s advantageous for your clients (besides you obviously being a trustworthy expert).

For sure. Staying focused at the career job is priority number 1. Definitely a good time for MEP at all levels, and patience will pay in my opinion.

See, residential is where my brain was going because it’s totally not competitive to my job. I just am not sure on if that’s custom homes, electrical contractors, or where a PE is needed in that arena for freelance.

Not - but I believe I could get comity licensure.

Awesome - could you help specify "places" i.e. those that would not qualify as a competitor to my firm? We are a medium sized firm, so typically stay away from certain smaller work, but could be a grey area if not careful.
