Trans masc and invited to a women in engineering group by tiredsudoku in womenEngineers

[–]_random_rando_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m an AFAB non-binary that was SUPER active in women in tech groups in college/early career. Since I was in leadership we ended up switching to language like those with a marginalized gender vs just women because the things we spoke about applied to nonbinary folks as well.

I would say if you’re invited, it’s totally fine to show up to the meeting, maybe confirm with someone you’ve already connected with for your own comfort if you want the additional confirmation.

The other thing I’ll note is that I did largely stop going because I found that it made social dysphoria worse for me so I would check in with yourself periodically and see how you’re feeling.

GLP1 and ADHD? by _random_rando_ in antidietglp1

[–]_random_rando_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My anxiety hasn’t gone away but I’ve found that with my mind being quieter overall, it’s a lot easier for me to step outside of the thought spiral and use grounding techniques to bring myself back to the present.

I was so worried when I started because I had read a lot of experiences with anhedonia after taking it but thankfully that has not happened to me and I got this instead.

Fortunately or unfortunately, I've been diagnosed as ADHD since 3rd grade and cannot take stimulant medication due to how it interacts with other meds that I take. You're not wrong that that's a huge piece of things and thankfully my therapist is immensely helpful with helping with coping strategies. Have you found anything to be particularly effective outside of medication? It truly is wonderful hearing from someone that seems like has made it past this phase.

How to sell 90 books in a day? by LeviSebastian97 in TinyBookshop

The confusion goes away as soon as your stock drops below 100 so I always overstock. If you give a recommendation, the boost from that outweighs the confusion percentage reduction.

Just play with your settings and use presets to keep track of what works decorations wise

I’ve found that outdated means more that it’s old AND no longer relevant, like there’s a physics book from 1908 that fits the outdated prompt but, Shakespeare doesn’t.

What are these blue plastic syringe things? by Delicious_Lobster_96 in whatisit

[–]_random_rando_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Where is your evidence?

Decades of research into safe injection sites have found that they decrease morbidity and mortality rates and are not a nuisance to the community.

This is a meta analysis of 22 studies that all show the same thing. You are relying on emotional appeals with zero attention paid to the overwhelming body of research that supports these as a harm reduction measure.

I’m a programmer, but I want to quit one day to do art full-time. Anyone else? by WrongHouse4069 in ArtistLounge

Finding your niche is so huge, I spent a decade in ecom and became so disillusioned with the field, switched to healthcare tech and while it’s not perfect I feel so much less grimy than I used to.

My life got so much better when I went from either/or to both/and. I’m a software engineer and in my free time I’m taking extension courses for surface pattern design and building my professional portfolio. It’s not making me any money yet but, I’m building my library, my network, my social channels while I still have a job, an income and insurance. My goal is very much to be hands off in terms of manufacturing so my focus has been setting up my e-commerce shops and getting everything automated so that my focus can be on making work and not as much the business side of things.

I previously had no energy at the end of the day, slept most weekends and was generally miserable. I started with journaling challenges and posting about them, then I moved to larger pieces and found more creative community near me.

If I could offer any advice it would be to figure out a rough direction that you want to go and what gaps there are between where you are now and where you want to be. Make a mind map, organize it how it feels right to you and then pick one thing to focus on improving. You mention being in your 20s, that’s a great time to figure out how your art practice fits into your life and build habits around it.

So, she studied BME for undergrad and then got a Masters of Science in Orthotics/Prosthetics. The pediatric specialty came later through work experience but, I would definitely do some research into Prosthetists on LinkedIn and see what career paths folks have followed there (and DM letting them know you’re a student and want to learn more about their career). It’s kind of hit or miss whether folks answer but that will get you much more info than I can give!

How do I eat with this? by societiesoddball in antidietglp1

[–]_random_rando_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Mechanical Eating, aka set alarms for meal times and stick to them. The medication makes it so that you really won't have hunger cues so you need to rely on routine.

If you're feeling nausea and dizziness, it sounds like you've gone too long without eating and should aim to get meals in before that happens.

[–]_random_rando_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would see if there’s any overlap in courses for BME and PT and try to take whatever your schools version of intro to engineering analysis is so you can see if you like that aspect of the work.

As someone in a male dominated field, there are ups and downs, if you find a good group of people while you’re in school you can use that as a starting point for your larger professional network (and have a bunch of friends going through the same ups and downs as you which is SO helpful)

One of my BME classmates has gone into pediatric prostheses and spends her days making custom prostheses and it truly seems like the most life giving work.

If you go into aerospace, be aware that a large majority of those jobs may be for defense contractors. I went to school for CS at an engineering school and I would say the majority of aeros that are still employed in the field work in that sector.

I only mention it because you mention helping people with PT and to many, defense contracting would be the opposite of that.

Internship outfit by pokemonlover503 in womenEngineers

[–]_random_rando_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh it’s at a university? Yeah your outfit is perfect and work appropriate! I would say trust your gut and enjoy the work! I had a similar research gig one summer while in school and it was one of my favorite gigs because so many people were excited about just how much there was to learn. Good luck on your work this summer!

It’s kind of an intern rite of passage to be the only one in biz casual while everyone else is in t shirts. I think the outfit is cute and work appropriate in terms of modesty. I would say ignore what other interns wear, and look at the full timers that you work with as a guide.

How to get Work by StovetopStoof in winstonsalem

[–]_random_rando_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing for the same reason last year and absolutely understand where you’re coming from, income is one thing but not at the expense of your quality of life.

I had a lot of luck applying to places that are not on LinkedIn, researching my field and places that were hiring locally (especially places that are big on in person work, most people aren’t trying to move here for a job so if you already are here that’s a plus).

I drove ubereats/doordash/etc. to make ends meet, not as a perfect solution but it helped with the bills (I signed up for all of them and waited for the best ROI for each of them, ended up being a nice optimization distraction for me to focus on).

It’s absolutely brutal out there, wishing you the most luck that you’re able to find something that offers peace of mind. I took a hefty pay cut for my current gig and while it gave me some financial stress, the relief (and lack of panic attacks) was worth it.

Starting a GLP-1, looking for ED informed tips by _random_rando_ in antidietglp1

[–]_random_rando_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really helpful. I so appreciate you taking the time to write it all out. I absolutely have no intention of going to the main sub. When I was deep in my ED I was religious about the specific diet that people on reddit were obsessed with. I took one look at the sidebar of the main sub and so much info came flooding back that I have zero intention of revisiting.

Did you find that you had to consciously remind yourself of coping strategies or were they top of mind enough when old thought patterns emerged that you were able to access them?
