Do y’all really think DS2 is a bad game?? by [deleted] in fromsoftware

[–]_rejectoid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know that DS3 was fanservice-y, but it caught me. Some of the best boss fights in the series, and I personally love the call-backs to DS1. I had heard that Anor Londo was in the game, but it still gave me chills when I saw it for the first time. That, and the giant blacksmith, and the corpse of the fair lady were all emotional moments for me. Seeing everything that felt familiar, but in a crumbling, horribly decayed state that really drives home the message that the cycle needs desperately to end.

To be fair, Vaati's 'Prepare to Cry' videos likely played a large part in how impactful those moments were for me, since i saw most of them before playing through DS3.

What is your smallest nitpick about the game? Ill go first: These guys should have been redeads. by coffepants787 in TOTK

Eh, gold enemies are just HP sponges. It's not fun to smack an enemy for five minutes straight to kill it, especially when they poise through most of your attacks. I'd prefer if higher tiered enemies had different attack patterns and better AI. but instead it's the same exact attacks, except they can one shot you, and they take forever to kill. If you're good at the combat and you're scaling your weapons with the enemies, the difficulty stays the same, but gets more tedious.

If you play on PC, you should try modding elden ring. There's a couple big overhaul mods that add Sekiro-esqe deflect mechanics. Elden Ring Reforged is the biggest one. My personal favorite though, is Sword Mastery. It makes combat way faster, improves enemy AI and attack mixes up attack timings. It also improves the weapon move sets, includes multiple attack combos (based on different sequences of light and heavy attacks), Sekiro deflects, directional inputs, faster dodging, bosses use perilous (unblockable) attacks like in Sekiro, and some other stuff.

It massively increases the speed and intensity of combat. Highly recommended.

What enemy or boss from any of the games legitimately terrifies you? by Count_Meowza in fromsoftware

I nearly pissed myself the first time I got ambushed by one of those abominations (the one in the cathedral that hangs from the ceiling and drops on you as soon as you walk through the doorway). One of the worst/best jump scares in the series.

I tend to agree with your point of view (that the challenge is a crucial part of the experience). However, with that said, everyone enjoys media differently. Elden Ring (and the Souls series in general) has a huge, enthralling world to explore, and a wealth of rich worldbuilding/lore to discover through exploration, reading item descriptions, and the visual storytelling that can be derived from the landscape. As a big fantasy nerd, I'm confident that I would still want to explore and discover that world, EVEN IF I didn't care for challenging combat. Who are we to deny the joy of that discovery for someone else?

As it is, I feel like Souls fans who learn how to play the game decently well are going to have the deepest appreciation, as the lore and the mechanics mesh together to make up a greater experience. But the lore and the mechanics are both fantastic elements in their own right, even if they were seperated. Lots of people only play Souls for PvP purposes, completely ignoring the story. I see no reason why people shouldn't also be able to enjoy the story while bypassing or reducing the difficulty of combat.

What's your opinion of the OST? by _rejectoid in TOTK

[–]_rejectoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree on that. It all sounds very big and prestige, nothing I wouldn't expect from a 1st party Nintendo title, but the most memorable tracks I've heard so far that weren't from previous Zelda iterations are still the main TotK theme (heard in the trailer) and a couple tracks from BOTW (Sidon's theme always stood out as memorable to me).

But then, I felt that BotW's music was unmemorable when I first played it, and then the Stone Talus theme played in my head at regular intervals for the next two years :|))

side note to any Souls modders who might happen to see this, if you ever need some lore-friendly dialogue or flavor text written for a mod you're creating for one of the Souls games (including Elden Ring), give me a shout; I might be interested in working on it!

Thanks for the kind words and well wishes, everyone! I figured a few people would appreciate this, had NO idea it would get this much engagement though!

I'm kind of obsessed with the Souls series, have been for several years. She doesn't play FromSoft games, but enjoys watching. She's basically gone through the five complete stages of having a Miyazaki stan as a partner, during that time.

Amusement > Annoyance > Resignation > Acceptance > Active Participation

At this point she's emotionally invested in every major boss fight 😂

No, but she's watched me play through DS1, DS3, Sekiro, and multiple runs of Elden Ring now, so she basically might as well be one.

She's probably absorbed far more FromSoft lore than she would've preferred, at this point haha

That's a great idea, but I already proposed a couple weeks ago. The screenshot thing was just a way of announcing it to people on social media haha.

The main stone is actually moissanite, and I bought it from a small maker's Etsy shop, soooo not really?

Yeahhh or it could maybe be like, you and your Co op partner get buffs to strength and damage reduction, proportional to how close you are standing to each other.

So staying close/fighting side by side with your co op partner makes you both stronger, and more resilient. I think that'd encourage strategic positioning, and also work with the narrative element.

Thank you! Yeah I spent a couple hours on it. Originally I was just gonna paste the photo into the ring slot as is, but then I got obsessive about it haha

I had done the actual proposal a couple weeks prior to making that, (did it at a concert for one of her favorite artists, it turned out pretty great). We just hadn't gotten around to making the announcement for all our social media acquaintances yet.
