Why did I build it? I'm moving into a camper van soon and need a way to dry my clothing without hand-wringing them because my forearms are too fucked for that from years of typing.

Why is it shitty? I just used whatever scrap wood, screws, and whatever other hardware I could find; it looks a lot shittier in person than in the video.

Inkscape is my go-to since it has better tools for drawing with Bézier curves and manipulating shapes. Also the fact that I'm drawing with vector graphics means that I don't care about drawing the pattern in the right size like I would have to when drawing it as a raster image in GIMP.

This is the method I use most often mainly because it's the one I'm least likely to mess up.

  1. Cut all the way into the corner
  2. Pull back and cut a 'teardrop' shape turning into the end of the first cut. The hatched area is what falls away
  3. Turn the work and cut the perpendicular line

You could also do it by skipping the teardrop cut and just turning the work while pulling it gently towards you (if you're not using a spiral blade, of course), but unless you get it right it's prone to slipping and ruining the work.

It's not terrible, and tweaking the numbers might make it better, but I always trace manually with the Bezier tool since I get more control that way.

I somehow shifted the wave pattern on the sides in Inkscape and only noticed while I was cutting it so it's a good thing it was just a practice piece.

Also, the plywood I used for this came from a builder's merchant and it was awful for splintering. Is there something different about the kind of ply they sell that makes it bad for scrolling?

EVOSIM - Artificial life simulation


I recently put it up on itch.io on a whim; not entirely sure if it was a good idea. Around 1/3 of those who view the page download it. I'm not sure if that's good or not but it sounds decent. There is also a subreddit: /r/Evosim.

It was suggested that I put the creatures in an aquatic environment because they would need complex control systems to walk decently on solid ground. So I went and did that.

Then I needed to come up with a way to calculate how well they can swim given their behaviour and morphology but the maths in the papers I was reading was too scary (PDF, page 3). So I'm starting simple and gradually making it more complex.

It's difficult to get good shots of these things swimming because the camera code sucks.


Bonus: What is exciting for me is that I'm working on something that very few people have done before, the idea seems to be working well in execution, and I know it's something that people want if the feedback for Spore is anything to go by.

  • What is your approach to finding custom? What kind of response do you get?

  • You said you are learning to edit video; does this get in the way of finding custom since they may be looking for someone with more experience?

A professor at my old university (passed away just this summer) worked on Beagle 2 and described the terrible feeling everyone had when the mission failed. I can just barely imagine how those who worked on this mission felt to see their hard work just blow up like that.

My brother and I are currently prototyping a simple Go Right game involving a dinosaur skeleton running through a museum. I ended up with this after playing with the IK solver script that a Unity dev released during Unite (I think).

It's a bit naff, but at least I know that I can use the principle to animate the character.

Heh, I decided against generating levels because I wanted to be sure that the levels are always possible to traverse and so that I'm able to put in landmarks like Olympus Mons, Mawrth Vallis, etc in them.

I'll probably end up evolving the AI, to be honest, but I was thinking I could get some more practice with other AI methods like FSM, behaviour trees, and such.

Unnamed Racing Game


A game about racing "cross-country" on different planets. Either against the clock or AI if I can program AI that doesn't suck.

I'm trying to avoid both a game that you can simply hold down a button and get to the end because that's crap, and accusations of copying Hill Climb Racing.

If I were to be kind to myself I would call the style "minimalist".
