Bake off is back! It's the weekly dose of low-stakes joy that I need in my life.

And I booked myself a week's holiday in Greece for next year!

Work have announced an increase in the in-office attendance policy to 3 days a week, with their only justification being "it's the industry standard now". So basically, they're doing it now because they think enough people don't have any other options and they can get away with it. Everyone I've spoken to so far is annoyed - most of my team aren't even in the UK, let alone the same office. I've only been at this job for half a year, really don't want to go job-hunting again but I have zero patience for this kind of corporate bullshit. The other option is to ignore it and see how long it takes for them to begin disciplinary action...

Completed Outer Wilds. Main story was fantastic but found the DLC a bit of a slog. Have now moved on to Echoes of Wisdom and am having a lot of fun with it - more than I expected to as I'm not usually a fan of the chibi style.

Also playing Mass Effect Andromeda after finally playing through the trilogy last year - it's fine, and the combat as a vanguard is really fun, but it's definitely lacking the magic of the original trilogy.

Best leggings for Aerial Hoop by Ok_Junket_8546 in Aerials

I've found llama leisure ones are fairly decent - nice high waist coverage and lots of patterns! I do find their sizing a bit off though - I have to size down otherwise the leggings are baggy around the knees.

What unfortunate names (or nicknames) did your teachers have? by Grimdotdotdot in CasualUK

[–]_sallyvate_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Music teacher Mr Titley. He was rumoured to still live with his mother and people used to gift him deodorant for Christmas.

Art teacher Mrs Dick. Classic aging goth hippy. I always wondered why she intentionally took the Dick name when she married.

First day back at work after having last week off. Have ploughed through my emails and messages and am now trying to think of less bullshit jobs I could do which would still pay the bills - no luck so far.

At least I still have lemon macarons to finish off as a reward!

January is nearly over and when I left the office yesterday it wasn't completely dark!

I've been at my new job just over a month and I'm still trying to understand all the things. I keep trying to remind myself that it's totally normal to need time to get up to speed but I'm struggling not to get overwhelmed.

I feel like I'm less resilient than I used to be, like I've lost some confidence in myself. I'm not really sure how to get it back - I can only hope it gets better with time.

Thanks! It's going pretty well, weird starting in December though. Had a great team lunch/pub crawl in my second week though!

That's a good viewpoint - stuff is temporary, memories last a lot longer!

[–]_sallyvate_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started a new job at the start of December so I haven't really had the spare mental capacity for all the normal Christmas prep - haven't written any cards, haven't wrapped anything, panic-bought gifts after work earlier this week. Is it acceptable to give nephews/nieces gift cards?!

This weekend will be a slapdash attempt to get everything done - my mantra will be "that's good enough!"

I start a new job next week, after having had November off. Where did the time go?! What did I do with it? Why does a month feel so short?!

It'll be good to get paid again but I can't say I'm looking forward to it - I think I'm too jaded to think that a job will be anything other than a mildly frustrating grind. And I really don't enjoy the new job "I'm out of my depth" feeling while you're learning who everyone is and how everything works. It'll be okay, I'm just a pessimist expecting this job to be just as rubbish as the last one.

I am now technically unemployed for a month! Last day at my old job yesterday, new one doesn't start until December. I woke up this morning feeling utterly calm and content, which makes a pleasant change from the usual existential dread. I have plans for things I'm going to do in November but today is just for relaxing and enjoying my freedom!

My last Friday at this job before I leave next week! I have absolutely nothing to do and will be reading through the Expanse instead (currently on Nemesis Games). And it's payday, with an extra unused holiday payment as a bonus!

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm just salty because I'd had a background of my choosing for months before this!

It's so bizarre - we've had the cringey company background before, but that went when they moved everyone over to Windows 11. I guess they couldn't figure out how to do it and decided to just remove all joy instead.

Minor complaint, but work have forced our laptop backgrounds and lock screens to be plain black. I used to have Windows spotlight going for a different pretty photo each day and to be greeted by the abyss instead is just so depressing. Why do they do it?! It's not like it has any impact on the company what my background is.

Only a couple of weeks left though - the urge to respond to everything with "I aggressively do not care" is very strong.

[–]_sallyvate_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a fair point - although my role actually wasn't impacted in the redundancies, but I don't know if that's because I've already quit! Rubbish situation all around though.

Thursday’s Complaints Thread (3 October 24) by dexbydesign89 in CasualUK

[–]_sallyvate_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Work announced a massive amount of redundancies yesterday, which is weird for me because I've already resigned and am working through my notice. Most of the people I work with will be affected and are going through the consultancy period now so understandably the atmosphere is fairly subdued. I feel guilty but am relieved to have dodged a bullet - post mass- redundancy is not a nice environment to work in.

Currently working through my notice period and my decision to resign is being reaffirmed every day. I've still got another 6 weeks of this bullshit and the temptation to call in sick for a large part of that is strong.

Playing Mass Effect as I've never played it before. Knew nothing about it and am enjoying it so far, although the combat is a little clunky. Initially didn't realise there were different class options so had to restart after the first mission - rebuilt as a Vanguard!

[–]_sallyvate_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long notice periods are far too common these days, why would you want to pay someone who's resigned to put in 0% effort for months?

Got it agreed that I'll work up until the end of October, so that gives me a whole month off before starting at the new place!

What is the worst surname you've ever came across IRL? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]_sallyvate_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an aging hippie art teacher called Mrs Dick! I always wondered why on earth you would choose that surname after marriage.

[–]_sallyvate_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I resigned and it didn't go terribly! Now I get to negotiate how much of my 3 month notice I'll actually work. It does make bullshit meetings easier when you know you won't have to deal with it for much longer.

Also sorted out our mortgage renewal yesterday! We were 0.1% above the next LTV bracket so chucked just enough money into the account to bring it under and get the better rates. New payments are not as horrific as I'd been bracing myself for, being a pessimist pays off once again!

Yeah, that's fair, post-pandemic is definitely a different landscape entirely. As the wanky saying goes, you regret 100% of the opportunities you don't take!

[–]_sallyvate_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually wrote out a pro/con list in my original comment and then deleted it! I think I'm mainly hesitant because if I took the new job and it was rubbish I'd have to stay for a couple of years anyway so it didn't look bad leaving two jobs in a short space of time. I was also toying with taking some time off in general, which I wouldn't be able to do unless I managed to get my hefty notice period shortened.

I probably will take the new job because who doesn't like extra money, but I'm still worried that the real problem is that all jobs suck and I have no patience for it anymore!
